Flashback to the 1920's

Prohibition
Prohibition: The action of prohibiting. "The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution-which banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors." It was hard for most people to enforce this law because of how long it had been around. Speakeasies were created so they could sell/drink liquor illegally. In early 1933 the 21st Amendment was made to repeal the 18th Amendment. A negative about this is violence had broken out and people were illegally selling alcohol. A positive was that it had stopped a lot of trouble.
19th Amendment

19th Amendment: Gave the woman the right to vote. August 18th, 1920 is when the 19th Amendment was passed. Women were not as equal as men were, so it was a pretty huge deal. "Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott and other activists, formed organizations that raised public awareness and lobbied the government to to grant voting rights to women." After 70 years these groups had finally earned the 19th Amendment. A positive from this is women had finally earned some equal rights, although today we are still not as equal we have some of the same rights as men.Al Capone

Racial Unrest
Source: American Journey Text book
Racial Unrest has began because of a young African American that was stoned while swimming in Lake Michigan. African Americans and White Gangs roamed the cities for attacking each other for about two weeks. African American men and woman had gone to M. Garvey for advice and help. He had founded the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) in 1914. This group had helped African American men and women build up in the world, help them build business and help them become pretty successful. In my perspective again this is a positive. This is a positive because it has shown how Americans have changed and became more open minded. It shows how successful African Americans have came from working hard.Revival of the KKK
Scopes Trail
"In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called "Monkey Trial" begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law." The law passed in March stating "teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that the man has descended from a lower order of animals." And Scopes did exactly the opposite of what they were told to teach. I think that this trial was sort of a positive. I believe it was a positive because, it helped us look at religion more, and teach us that we can't go around preaching the bible because there will be people who will go against it.
Consumer Economy
1920-1929 the nations total wealth doubled more. The USA then became a "consumer society", this changed the way people lived from coast to coast. Americans were uncomfortable with the change, change has always been bad to Americans. Both positives and negatives came out of this. It is a good thing that America is doing really well, but it seems that the adjustment to money and wealth was difficult for some.
