Stanwood Middle School
Family Update - March 16th, 2021
Good morning Stanwood Middle School Families!
Our Skyward system was down this weekend, so this message is coming Tuesday morning instead of Saturday morning. I apologize if the message comes through multiple times this week!
We have had a great return to Stanwood Middle School for many of our students over the past 3 weeks. One of the issues that has come up is making sure we know why a student is not here. When someone is not here we know to know why and talk to a parent/guardian. Please remember to call our office at 360-629-1350 if your child is absent (and expected) for in person academic support on M/T or Th/F. We appreciate you letting us know why your child wasn't with us in the morning.
As part of our Covid protocols, we will be calling/texting/emailing any family of a student that we anticipate being in building on Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday if they are absent.
Please call our office if your student is absent for morning in person academic support by 9:30 a.m. if possible.
Sports Return
We are excited that sports conditioning is returning this week to Stanwood Middle School. All athletes and parents should have received an email with all of the expectations. Don't hesitate to reach out to our office with any questions.
Picture Retakes
Picture retakes are coming on March 24. We will have more information in next week's Family Message.

The COVID List
Hello Everyone! This week in our Wednesday Class Meetings, I presented a Character Strong lesson called “The COVID List.” This followed up on our lesson last week about things we can control and things we cannot control, specifically as they relate to stress and anxiety. The pandemic has been an intense time of many things that we cannot control, so this is an important time to practice focusing on a few simple and healthy things that we can control.
This week we practiced focusing on some exciting or inspiring goals for this Spring in the areas of Self, Family, Friends, and School. We had some great conversations, with many creative ideas shared. Students shared ideas such as take more walks outside, be more positive about myself, check in with friends, and try to get good grades in school. I encourage you to use the pictures below to continue these interesting conversations at home.
In April, I will be offering an optional virtual group for students to further process the pandemic. Now that we are a year into this highly unusual and challenging situation, I want to be sure that students continue to have healthy outlets to process what this experience has been like in their lives.
If you have concerns about your child, either about school or anything in life, please feel free to reach out to me at KFox@stanwood.wednet.edu and I will check in your student. I am here to support students, and also to work with families as part of your team to give your student the best opportunity to succeed in school and life.
All My Best ~
Kara Fox

Important information for return to school:
1. Please make sure your student, especially 6th graders and other students new to our building, know their schedule. We can print schedules when students arrive and then show them to their room. We will have many adults at the entrance to the building, in the hallways and outside classrooms to help direct students. We also have signs posted all over the building.
2. Bus routing. All busses will go the high school first to be screened before coming to Stanwood Middle School. For the process at the high school students receive a stamp on their wrist to verify they have been screened, please make sure your student is aware. Students being dropped off and students walking will be screened at the front of the building.
At the end of the day busses will pick up students at the front of the building and parents can pick up students in our east parking lot.
If you need information on bus routes please see the Family Message sent out by the District.
3. Our Hybrid Schedule is for academic support:
a. Students with the last name A-K will be in school Monday and Tuesday.
b. Students with the last name L-Z will be in school Thursday and Friday.
c. Our first week back, students will go to periods 1 and 2 both days.
d. The second week, students will go to periods 3 and 4 both days.
e. The third week, students will go to periods 5 and 6 both days.
f. The first class of the day starts at 7:40, the second class starts at 8:35. Students leave campus at 9:25.
4. As we plan for Spartans to return to Stanwood Middle School, our top priority is everyone's safety.
You and your Spartan will see videos and posters (examples below) to reflect student expectations to keep everyone safe and healthy at school.
We are continuing to get the school ready for students following all health department guidelines. As we work to follow all of the protocols required for our return, it is important that you make sure your Spartan knows the following:
a. Daily Attestation questions + temperature check to be in building.
b. Students will go straight to their first class in the morning.
c. Masks covering nose and mouth at all times.
d. Social distancing in classrooms and hallways at all times.
e. Bathroom breaks during class time only.
f. No food allowed. Water bottles are allowed, students just need to ask to step into the hallway to take a drink.
g. Bring charged chromebook and headphones daily.
5. Here is the link to a video that will help remind everyone of our protocols:
We understand there is a lot of information! Please do not hesitate to call the school if you need anything. We will have lots of adults available to answer student questions, keep everyone safe and make sure students are comfortable.
