Good communication between home and school is essential in order to build a team with parents leading to our students’ success. We’ve heard the term reciprocal communication, meaning sharing messages so the communication is going in both directions. The importance of this process has been stressed through our focus school review over the past two years, and it’s not going away, as it shouldn’t because it’s good for kids when we keep in touch with parents and encourage them to talk with us. It’s easier than ever to make this happen with all of the technology available to us, and many of you are already taking advantage of these technological innovations to foster improved communicate with parents. With the use of technology, parents and teachers can get in touch with one another at any time, making communication more productive for everyone involved. Below is an article about innovative communication tools to consider. Think about adding one that you’re not using currently.

1st Grade Happenings
First grade students have been working on generating writing ideas from their own lives and telling stories orally in preparation for writing. They have been working on using strategies for spelling unfamiliar words, such as using a word wall and stretching words. They have also been using “Think, Pair, Share” and learning what it means to be a considerate community member and partner.
During shared reading, the first grade students have been exploring the use of punctuation in a text. They have been echo reading and chorally reading the story with attention to punctuation. They have continued to work on listening carefully and participating responsibly.
In Making Meaning, the first graders have been practicing retelling stories with simple narrative structures. They have been discussing important characters in stories and making text-to-text connections by comparing and contrasting characters across stories. They have also been working on making text-to-self connections. During IDR the students have begun reading books at their independent reading levels. They have also been working on speaking clearly, listening respectfully to the thinking of others, and taking turns when working in pairs.
The first grade students have been working on using and discussing strategies for fluent subtraction up to 10. They also explored the addition chart and looked for patterns. First grade students used the addition chart to solve subtraction problems and find related number sentences.
