Immersion Education – Teaching academic content in another language
Hello Fronteras Families!
Thank you for another wonderful week together! We hope everyone is finding time to browse our fabulous Scholastic Book Fair. We want to thank the team of incredibly hard working folks who set up all of the displays and worked the Fair this week. Your time is greatly appreciated!
Please remember that Fronteras will be closed October 19, 20, and 21. Fronteras staff will be attending the Sixth Annual International Immersion Conference. Please note the following changes to Fronteras’ schedule:
· School closed: October 19, 20, 21 *Students DO NOT ATTEND school these days*
· School open: October 27, November 11, and February 16 *Students ATTEND school these days*
Vacation and Missed Work
When students travel and miss instructional days, the classroom teachers will hold all in-class work until the student returns to school. Packets of work will not be sent with students while on vacation. Upon return to school, students will have the number of school days missed to complete the work without penalty.
Fronteras staff works hard each day building, improving, and maintaining positive relationships with our students. While this is a constant focus, it’s important that you know the basic guidelines we follow for student behavior and redirection when necessary. Below is a quick glance at our school’s behavior program. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions.
Fronteras Behavior Program Overview
Fronteras is a Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) school. CKH is the district behavior initiative adopted in 2012. All classrooms, including PE, Art, and Music have a Social Contract. A Social Contract is developed with students and is an agreement to how they will interact with one another and staff. Fronteras staff follows a Social Contract as well.
Behavior Protocol
Instructors immediately refer to the Social Contract and identify the behavior that has been violated.
When a student violates the contract with the same behavior a 2nd time, the instructor quietly asks the student the 4 CKH questions. Depending on student response, one of the two options below will be followed.
· If a student answers each question appropriately, student may remain in the room
· If a student refuses to answer, the student has earned their way out of the classroom. The school principal immediately meets with the student. Next steps depend entirely on the student’s responses and behavior.
When a student violates the Social Contract with a different behavior, the 4 questions are asked again, options above are followed, and student is given the opportunity to correct the behavior and remain in class.
4 CKH Questions:
· What are you doing?
· What are you supposed to be doing?
· Were you doing it?
· What are you going to do about it?

The goal of Capturing Kids’ Hearts is to have individuals take full responsibility for their behavior. When students earn their way out of their classroom(s), they must earn their way back in.
If a student is verbally or physically disruptive, depending on the severity, the principal is called to defuse the situation, and if necessary, remove the child from the classroom.
If student behavior is dangerous, school principal will chaperone student while the instructor takes the remaining students to a partner classroom.
*Fronteras follows all MSBSD policies and procedures within the MSBSD Student Handbook*

News from the Art Room
Dear Fronteras Families,
I am excited to tell you about our wonderful art projects and fund raiser we are involved in in our Art Room. Each grade level has been working on various art projects that integrate information from their regular classrooms to the skills students are learning in art. We are working with Square 1 Art to create a unique opportunity to celebrate our artistic accomplishments while raising funds for our art program here at Fronteras.
Your child /children will be coming home soon, October 24th, with a custom catalog featuring their artwork. We would love to invite you to purchase keepsakes for the whole family containing your child’s masterpiece. Our school earns profit from every order.
All orders will be due no later than November 5th, 2016. Our order should arrive at Fronteras on or near November 29th and all purchases will go home with students. If you are available to help on November 5th and/or November 29th, please let me or Misty Adams know. If you have any questions, please let me know as soon as possible.
I am just LOVING being your child’s art teacher. I hope this is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to your child’s growth as an artist.
