Shark "Shout Outs" MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People That Make Our School "A Home Away From Home"
A Big Shark Shout Out to Officer Tommy Clarke for visiting our Journalism class to listen to our crime articles and give us advice about what a good investigative reporter would ask, look for, and write about. Then he shared real, true crime stories from Harwich and the lower Cape. We took notes and the students have chosen the story about which they want to write a whole article. Thanks Officer Clarke for giving up your time! **Pictured above: Officer Clarke with Ms. Forte-Doyle and her class
Kudos to Angela Baptiste for coming to the aide of a student in distress by alerting the office in a speedy manner. Her concern for a classmate as well as her quick thinking (and running!) emphasizes our school motto "You Are Important" and "Home Away From Home". Thank you Angela!
Janet Ferro
Special shout outs for people who work tirelessly to help with the show...even after it is over! Peter Moynagh for his help finding costumes for the play and delivering food from our can drive. Lisa Barbato and her helper Brendan Pawlina for cleaning costumes!! Your efforts are so very much appreciated! Rachel Cardillo for becoming our resident photographer check out her pictures of the show and the Pops concert.
Ms. Donovan
Shark shout out to Patrick Polack for his outstanding class participation in Culinary Arts. Patrick is very helpful and cooperative and continues to develop his knife skills and knowledge in the kitchen. Thank you!
Ms. Freitas
What a sensational trip to DC!!!! Mr. Dickson deserves a HUGE, Gigantic Shark out!!!! The STAND students represented MRHS with such poise, dignity, and demonstrated a clear, precise knowledge of genocides, the foreign aid budget, bills that will be presented in the Senate/House. Talk about Monomoy Pride, it was all there and more!! I am so so lucky to be part of this school.
Sharon Gleason
Thank you to Ms. Sharon Gleason for her efforts & participation on the trip!
I love seeing students helping around the school. When the USPS Mail Delivery person had a cumbersome mail load to bring out to her truck, 10th grader Robbie Sieger, who happened to be in the lobby area, willingly helped her to do so. By holding the doors and clearing the way, it made the task easier for our carrier. Thank you Robbie!

Youth Risk Behavior Survey Information Night
On April 26th at 6:30 PM in our high school auditorium, our high school Peer Leaders will be presenting the results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey taken by our students in Grades 7-12 this past November. There are many positive trends seen in our data that we will proudly share, including the fact that Monomoy student use of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol continues to track downward and is well below the state average.
There are also areas where we can improve:
- 18% of our students in Grades 7-12 report watching 3 or more hours of TV daily, and
- 14% of our students in Grades 7-12 report playing 3 or more hours of videogames each day.
What the Youth Risk Behavior Survey didn’t capture in its questions was how much time our kids spend on Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media. From what I’ve seen from our teens, the social media screen time on mobile phones easily parallels time spent watching TV or playing videogames, pulling them and us as a society ever further away from the face-to-face.
I do hope you can come join me for the public presentation of the full results of this year’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

One of the ways students in Creative Writing and Sandscript, our Creative Writing club and magazine, are celebrating is to create Art & Poetry Posters. You will find them on walls throughout MRHS. Swim for Ryan Watson - Please Join Us! **New Date: Sunday April 2, 2017 2pm**
Beginning in 2008, members of the Chatham Fire Department have taken part in an April Fools’ Day “plunge” at one of our local beaches. In the first year, there was only ten participants and $200 raised, which was donated to Prostate Cancer Research. The participants vowed to get together every year and to spread the word, hoping more people would join in the fun. It was decided that each year, we would raise money for a different local individual or family in need, usually to assist with the financial burden of an illness or injury. Each year, the swim has grown immensely, both in the number of participants and in the funds raised. In 8 years of publicly advertising the swim, over $100,000 has been raised for local families. Aside from the financial assistance, the huge crowd generates an enormous emotional boost for the recipient and his/her family. It is truly a testament to the resolve of our local community, and it exemplifies the importance of everyone looking out for each other in our small community.
This year marks the 10th year that the April Fools from Chatham Fire have led the community into the frigid waters. On Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 2 pm, the Fools will be swimming for Ryan Watson. Ryan is a 27 year old Harwich resident. He was born and raised in Harwich, graduating from Harwich High School in 2007. He and his wife, Lizzie, continue to live in Harwich. Ryan was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor referred to as a medullablastoma. After receiving his diagnosis, Ryan and Lizzie decided to get married, and to fight this illness together as husband and wife. Ryan is being treated aggressively at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. Due to the aggressive nature of the treatments, Ryan will not be able to work his regular job with the Cape Cod Mosquito Control. Ryan, his wife Lizzie, and Ryan’s parents Bill and Jackie, will all miss a significant amount of work during Ryan’s treatments. 100% of your donations go directly to Ryan and Lizzie to assist them in any way they see fit. We hope to make this our biggest and best swim yet. There is no better way to slam the door on the lovely winter season than to take your first refreshing dip of the year!
Please join us, Sunday April 2, at 2:00 pm at Hardings Beach in Chatham. Donations of all amounts are graciously accepted. A free post-swim BBQ will take place at the Chatham VFW, immediately following the swim.
If you would like to donate but are not able to attend, cash and checks can be sent to:
