Units of Study & Thematic Curriculum

Reader's Workshop: This month we are learning all about one of our favorite authors, Mo Willems! Our study trip this month is going to watch, "Elephant and Piggie: We Are In A Play!". We are discussing and studying the character traits of these new, silly characters! Using these picture books this month, we will be starting Unit 5. Some of our essential questions we will think about as readers are listed below!

  • How can I use information from different sources to gain new knowledge?

  • How can I learn more by noticing all parts of the text?

  • How can I use multiple sources on the same topic to become an expert?

  • How can I share my new understandings?

We will be learning how to discuss our stories with partners, share our new findings, and the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts. We are continuing to build our stamina as partner readers. Reader's are still practicing their skills of being a helpful, reading partner!

Everyday Mathematics: We are almost finished wrapping up Section 5. We have practicing all kinds of measuring, number stories, and working with tally marks. In Section 6 we will do more with measuring, extending patterns, addition & subtraction stories, and new skip counting. Students continue to work hard during station tubs as they work through content designed specifically for their math needs. Check out some pictures in our gallery to see what we are up to during these stations!

4th Grade Technology Buddies: This month we are working with simple coding! Students are pairing up with their 4th grade buddies to learn how to code using iPad apps. Ask your student about playing "The Foos" in Technology special or with their 4th grade buddy!

5th Grade Reading Buddies: This month our reading buddies helped prepare you a special, Valentine's day surprise. They helped us write a message to you! We also showed them all about partner reading. We love spending time reading to our buddies.

PLTW: Force!

This week we are beginning our second module of PLTW (Project Lead The Way). In this module we will be learning all about the pushes and pulls of force. Check out our first day lesson using ThingLink. We discussed all the different forces that can be found on the playground. Ask your child tonight where else they use force in their life!

Library Day!

The students are in the routine, but I wanted to include in our newsletters that Thursday's are our library days! If your student brings home library books, please make sure they come back each Thursday! We attend library from 9:00-9:20. Thank you!

Water Bottles Please!

We are still having many drink breaks these past two months! If you wouldn't mind sending in a reusable water bottle with your child, this is extremely helpful! Many of us are not walking in the halls or returning as quickly as we should. Once a friend goes to get a drink, the whole class wants to take a little trip to the water fountains! They are welcome to drink from their water bottle as often as they need throughout the day. We always empty our bottles at the end of the day before heading home. Thanks for your help!
