Parkdale Elementary Weekly Update

This Week...

Dear Staff,

I hope everyone is enjoying the change in the weather. The rain and cooler temperatures make for a good excuse to hang out inside and enjoy a cup of coffee and good book.

Hiring Updates - I'm very excited to announce that we have offered positions to some very qualified candidates. We offered the following:

1st Grade:
Ariel Vaughn - She has taught 1st grade in Sedona Arizona and Redmond for the last 4 years after a career in graphic design. She comes highly recommended by Principals she has worked with.

2nd/3rd Grade: Emily Barghigiani - We know Emily as she has been a go-to sub for us for the last few months. We are very excited to see her join our team full time!

2nd Grade Temporary: Betty Nickerson - Betty is just finishing her student teaching in Bend and comes to us highly recommended by those who have worked with her.

Physical Education: We just finished interviewing candidates on Thursday of last week and had a very qualified pool of candidates. I'm hoping to be able to offer a position to a candidate on Monday.

As you may have heard, Lydia will be moving to Mid Valley full time for next year. And Sue Jepson will be at May Street as their counselor. We are very sad that these stellar ladies won't be with us at Parkdale next year. We wish them the best of luck and are happy for them being full time at one building.

We will be interviewing for our Music Position and Counselor Position in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Have a great week!

Mystery Science

Some of you have been experimenting with a program called Mystery Science. This is a web based science curriculum with "out of the box" experiments and lessons that are highly engaging for students. Those who have used it have been very happy with it. I have purchased a school account for you all to use for the 2016-17 school year. Please follow this link to find out more:

PDES Committee Work

Here are the committees we have been talking about. Please let me know if you are interested in doing some work at the curriculum rate on one or more of these this summer:

Second Steps - Adopting a Scope and Sequence for 2nd Steps and some of our Growth Mindset lessons

Teaching with Poverty in Mind - Developing a list of best practice strategies and some professional development for staff

Arts Integrated Programing at PDES - Researching successful programs and exploring how it might be applied at Parkdale.

Native Language Literacy - Research is clear on this topic. Best practice for ELLs is a native literacy program that transitions to English by 3rd or even 5th grade. However, as we know, there are many barriers for a program like this, especially in a small school like ours. This work would be focused on reviewing how native language literacy went for us when we did it as a school in the past and then providing a recommendation for our future.

Again, please contact me if you are interested in doing some of this work over the summer.

Collaborative Problem Solving Training with Sue Jepson

Tuesday, May 24th, 2:15-3:15pm

Holly's Room

Collaborative Problem Solving is a revolutionary, evidence-based approach for helping children with behavioral challenges. CPS promotes the understanding that challenging kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well – specifically skills related to problem solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance. Unlike traditional models of discipline, the CPS approach avoids the use of power, control and motivational procedures and instead focuses on building helping relationships and teaching at-risk kids the skills they need to succeed. This first class of this two part series will provide a brief overview of the CPS method and look at it's components and then we will follow up with a second class for further exploration and trouble-shooting for those who are exploring using this model. Please keep in mind that this is an introduction to CPS and does not substitute for the multi-day trainings that are necessary for certification.

Growth Mindset at Parkdale Elementary

The Growth Mindset strategy of the week this week is...

· Rather than praise, be interested (ask questions)

Teaching the Mountaineer Expectations: Month 2, Week 3

Using Self Talk:

This is another great week for learning at our school. An important skill for learning is using self-talk. Self-talk means talking to ourselves in a quiet voice or in our heads. Self-talk can help us stay on task and focus attention. Think about what self-talk you might use if you were trying to remember directions your teacher gave you. Remember to use self-talk today when you need to stay focused and on task!
