Keeping your child safe ONLINE

Your child's safety online is a priority for Springfield Public Schools and Sherwood Elementary. The school district uses a variety of filters, including Secruly, to provide multiple layers of security for students accessing online content. While every attempt is made to filter inappropriate content, due to the nature of the ever-changing Internet, we must be constantly vigilant in communicating with our students and families about positive digital citizenship.

As mentioned SPS already filters content at a high level, therefore, we are asking that parents do not place additional parental controls or restrictions on student devices. Doing so may result in your child not being allowed to take their device home.

Here is a list of controls or restrictions that should be avoided:

  • Passwords/Passcodes
  • Additional filters
  • Apps that restrict content
  • Removal of browsers
Placing any of these on your child's device impedes their ability to participate in approved classroom instruction and limits their access to our learning management system. As always, digital citizenship and education is our greatest asset as we equip 21st century learners to navigate a digital world. CommonSense Media provides valuable resources for parents looking to extend the digital citizenship curriculum beyond the classroom.
