Animal Adaptations: Animation
Computer Science Class, Dr. Wise
Computer Science and Science Standards:
- Decompose (break down) the steps needed to solve a problem into a precise sequence of instructions.
- Create programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals.
- Modify, remix or incorporate portions of an existing program into one's own work, to develop something new or add more advanced features.
- Work respectfully and responsibly with others online.
- Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving
- Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
- Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.
Student Objectives:
- Create an interactive animation using sprites and events.
- Code a model that shows biological evolution.
- Create new sprites and assign them costumes and locations.
- Explain how animals evolve and change as a result of changes in their environment
Vocabulary
- Adaptation - A change in an organism to better survive its environment
- Code - (v) To write instructions for a computer
- Event - An action that causes something to happen
- Evolution - The change in the characteristics of a species over several generations
- Migration - A long distance move an animal makes seeking a better environment
Student Directions:
In today’s coding lesson you will create models of several animal adaptations. Computer science can help us model how a change occurs. You can code your models to be interactive, like clicking an animal to watch it change. You will learn new coding skills, then you will code your own project based on other adaptations you’ve learned about before. You will be using Code.org to complete this assignment. Click on the Code.org link and enter the lesson code to get started.

Reflect:
Reflect on the following questions.
What did you learn today about sprites?
How do events work in your code?
Which level was the most challenging?
