Shared Reading:
Students read the Revolutionary War story, By the Sword, which is told from a unique perspective. A young teacher, Benjamin Tallmadge, is moved to enlist in George Washington's army. Through primary first hand accounts and Tallmadge's memoirs, this fictionalized account follows a young man who would go on to have a distinguished career as one of Washington's trusted officers. Students were asked to answer the following essential question: How does the character Benjamin change from the beginning to the end of the story?
Math:
Old Friends: Our old friends spent the week learning how to use a formula as a prediction tool. We are all set for our trip to Yellowstone National Park because we will be able make a pretty accurate prediction about when Old Faithful will erupt! We also practiced interpreting a variety of tables and graphs. Lastly, we ended our week learning about the circumference of a circle and comparing ratios and the use of the irrational number pi (3.14…).
New Friends: Friday our new friends tested on chapter 9. We will begin working on chapter 10 next week. In this unit, your child will take another look at geometry with an emphasis on symmetry. The class will explore the properties of reflections. Encourage your child to use these important translation words into their vocabulary which includes rotated, translated, and transformed.
