HES Shark Scoop
September 30, 2022
From Principal Cutone
Dear Harwich Elementary School Families,
Greetings to you on this beautiful day! As we turn the calendar to October and slide into fall, our elementary classrooms are also gradually transitioning from an emphasis on building community, establishing routines, and reviewing academics, to focusing on academic progress. Of course, we will continue to integrate social-emotional learning throughout the year, but for now, we can reap the benefits of focusing on softer skills so that our Sharks are prepared to be supportive and cooperative learning partners in the classroom.
During the month of September, our reading and math interventionists have been working with our classroom teachers to assess all of our students. This beginning-of-year academic assessment data is used to determine any gaps in skills and to identify students who need targeted interventions. Next week, in grades K-4, we will start to use a block of the day called WIN (What I Need) to offer interventions, extra practice, or academic extensions for students based on their current performance. If your child meets the criteria to receive interventions, you will receive an email next week with that information. Throughout the year, the groups will be fluid as we respond to student needs, and we will continue to keep you informed.
Thank you for continuing to help us streamline our arrival and dismissal processes. As a reminder, please do not request a bus change in PickUp Patrol for social gatherings, early release days, or birthday parties. The bus routes have been established, and each school bus is currently at student capacity and cannot accommodate changes to its ridership. If there is ever an emergency or a change in home address, please reach out to the front office for assistance.
As always, please let me know if I can be of assistance to you or your family. Enjoy the weekend!
My best,
Christie Cutone

MRSD seeks input for Portrait of a Graduate process
Monomoy Regional School District is embarking on the process of creating a Portrait of a Graduate. The creation of a Portrait of a Graduate will help inform Monomoy educators from elementary school through high school about the skillsets and mindsets today’s students and graduates need to be successful in their futures. As part of this process, there will be a number of focus groups held for students, parents and caregivers, staff, town officials, and business and community members, at which attendees can share their vision for Monomoy schools. The dates for each focus group as well as more information on Monomoy’s Portrait of a Graduate endeavor can be found on the website at https://www.monomoy.edu/portraitofagraduate. In the coming weeks, there will also be a survey sent out to allow stakeholders to share their input on this process. We look forward to hearing from many voices to help develop this “Portrait” to guide Monomoy schools in better preparing students for college, careers, and life.
