Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #4
Did you know? The Opiate Crisis is in the news because people are dying at alarming rates. While heroin and opiate induced overdoses are primarily occurring in people over 18, children and teens develop attitudes towards these substances at an early age without realizing it. Prescription and over the counter drugs are seen as safe by our kids. They are present in medicine cabinets, kitchen counters, and bedside tables in our homes and the homes of sick and/or injured family members. The fact that there is such easy access seems to say that adults consider these substances to be safe. The reality could not be farther from the truth. You can change this mindset in your family and prevent access. You can save a life.
Call to action….
· Carefully look over your home and find prescription and over the counter medication. This includes antibiotics, cold medicine, ADHD medications, etc., Spread the word to other family members.
· If you need the medications please lock them away. Count how many are present and monitor the amounts over time. Please don’t contribute to the 10% of 12th graders that used prescription stimulants not prescribed to them to get high or “do better on academics”, or the 5% of 10th graders who used over the counter medications to get high (2015 PAYS survey, GVSD)
· Take the medications you don’t need to your local police station to discard. Find the closest locations by clicking below.
https://apps.ddap.pa.gov/gethelpnow/pilldrop.aspx
· Explain to your family that leaving these medications out at home sends the wrong message. Think carefully about how casually medications are provided in your home. Don’t let your kids be part of the 50% of our students who reported that a friend or family member gave them prescription drugs that were not prescribed for them (2015 PAYS survey, GVSD).
