BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 10, 2023
Public Hearing
It has been 15 years since the District has adopted a Science textbook program. Science Framework for California Public Schools has been designed to be accessible to assistive technologies that are often used by persons with disabilities. Most of the framework is compliant with federal Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended).
The Science Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (framework) supports a three-dimensional vision of science education. In the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS), students need to do more than simply know about science; they need to know core science and engineering ideas, do science and engineering, and think like scientists and engineers.
The framework is a valuable resource for teachers, administrators, parents, and curriculum developers. The examples given in each chapter provide a vision of how science instruction and learning could look in a classroom, and teachers should use the examples as a starting point. The framework includes thematic and specific grade-level chapters.
On May 1st the teachers who piloted both programs to share their data on the survey and make a decision. An emphasis was placed on dialogue and discussion as a way of building their understanding of the selection process without the pressure of making a decision. The recommendation represents a consensus of the Science Adoption committee with members of the curriculum council invited to observe the process.
