A Dash of Salt - 10 Ways Halftime is More Refreshing Than a New Pair of Socks
In today's episode, I'll use the thoughts of a current NFL coach and my perspective as principal to provide some behind-the-scenes comparisons of why halftime is more important than just for entertainment. And as a bonus, you can use this new knowledge to show off with a general comment you toss out at your Super Bowl party to amaze your friends!

FOOD DRIVE: Our Annual Food Drive benefiting Bountiful Harvest is still going! Now through February 28th, send canned or boxed goods with your student, if you wish to participate. Donations will be collected and counted weekly to assign points. Whichever grade racks up the most points by the end of the month will win a small prize from the PTO. Please take a look at the attached flier for the most needed (aka DOUBLE POINT) items. NO GLASS PLEASE! Additionally, we have been asked if we could accept monetary donations. If you would like to donate that way, you can donate via PayPal here. Monetary donations will count as double points as well. (You must include your grade and Spencer Elementary in the comments of your donation for it to be counted.)
VIRTUAL STEAM NIGHT: Our virtual STEAM Night with Leslie Science Center will be TONIGHT, February 17th at 6:30pm. The LSC has customized a virtual STEAM night just for Spencer families! There will be four activities that students can try at home if they'd like to work along with the presenters. Please gather materials ahead of time. (See attached materials list.)

KINDNESS WEEK: The district will be celebrating Kindness Week next week, February 21-25. We will be doing COIN WARS during the week. All money collected will be donated to the I Will Right Now Foundation, which helps local families dealing with catastrophic events. We will do a daily announcement of which classes are in the lead to keep the momentum going. The class who brings in the most money will take home a prize from the PTO.
Kindness week shirts and hoodies are available now through Ivory Vines. A portion of year's shirt sales will benefit The Carl Nagy Foundation and The Sunflower Project. Students are encouraged to wear shirts promoting kindness on Friday, February 25th.

Note From the Counselor
Counselor Corner!
Welcome to February, families! Here we are again with another month and another lesson topic for classrooms. We will be visiting students to talk about Kindness and Empathy. Brighton Area Schools recognizes Kindness Week during the month of February, and we will connect with students to practice by looking at multiple perspectives in order to gain a better understanding of how our actions impact others and the world around us. We will discuss how others feel and where they are coming from. This provides a way to learn what we can do to help our family, friends, and peers when they need us most. Spreading Kindness is always a favorite message of ours, and we hope you continue to spread this message at home with your words and actions.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.
More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
