Kia ora koutou, kumusta, talofa lava
One of the things I love about working at St Mary’s is the bright and cheery smiles and greetings I get each day from our students. No matter if I am walking into a classroom or whether I’m outside in the playground, students will smile and say, “Hi, Mr O’Neill ” as I walk past.
As teachers at a catholic school, we strive to develop a relationship with each student so that we can understand their learning, social, emotional and spiritual needs. We are interested in helping nurture each individual to become the best person they can be whilst growing in their catholic faith and developing their personal relationship with Jesus. Each student has potential that needs to be fulfilled. Our hope is, that by the time each student leaves in year 8, they are well on their way to realising the skills and talents they possess and their potential to grow and flourish has been encouraged. The students’ smiles and friendly greetings are a sign of a connection and a sign of a healthy relationship.
A smile can brighten someone’s day. A smile can diffuse a tense situation and a smile passes on God’s love to another person.

Faith Fact
All Souls Day is a holy day set aside for honoring the dead. The day is primarily celebrated in the Catholic Church, but it is also celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and a few other denominations of Christianity. Purgatory is necessary so that souls can be cleansed and perfected before they enter into heaven. There is a scriptural basis for the belief of purgatory. The primary reference is in 2 Maccabees, 12:46; “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.”
