Mrs. Green's Class Newsletter

Room 203

HI PARENTS,

Thank you for signing up for parent/teacher conferences! I look forward to meeting with each of you. It would be helpful for me if you could please fill out the survey above. If you have anything specific you would like to discuss at conferences, this would be a great place to let me know!

Also, if your child is participating in the "Read To Succeed" program, the forms are due by Friday, February 5th. Feel free to turn them in earlier if you are finished!

Ms. Mowery joined us again this week to talk about effective communication. She taught the students the acronym ABC: Always Be Clarifying. Ask your child about he activity he/she did to practice this skill.

Thanks,

Mrs. Green and Ms. Ruiz

Pizza Day

The PTO will be starting a monthly Pizza Day at Greenbriar. The first one will be next Thursday, February 4th. NY Slices from Highland Park will be providing our slices from their nut free facility. They also have a gluten free pizza that we will offer as well. If students wish to participate they should bring in their cash, exact change only.

MATH

This week we finished Chapter 8a on decimals. We will review on Monday and test on Tuesday. A review packet came home earlier this week for students to practice. They can bring it in on Monday to check their answers, but it is not required.

After our test on Tuesday, we will continue with decimals in Chapter 8b.

Reader's Workshop

This week in Reader's Workshop, students chose their books for literature discussion groups. Students made their own group expectations and consequences. They had their first literature discussion and did a great job of discussing the text.

It is getting close to the time to vote for a favorite Rebecca Caudill nominee. The voting will take place in school during the month of February. The students are encouraged to submit a vote after reading at least three of the nominees. (See list below) If you are looking for a new book to read, these all come highly recommended!

Social Studies/ Writing

This week we took our test on Westward Expansion. We are very close to reaching our destination on our journey west. The students have encountered many challenges and hardships on their journey. They have been recording their experiences in diary form on their google docs. Ask your child to show you his/her diary!

Science Lab

The fifth graders began their six week science lab rotation this week. They began to explore ideas involving gravity. This is the first concept we will learn in our Space unit. On Thursday, students got to play with Mr. Toop's toys and think about how the forces of gravity affect each one.

On Friday, students explored the idea of weight. Weight is a measure of how strongly gravity is pulling down on an object. Since more massive objects produce more gravity, the weight of an object changes depending on the size of the planet it is on. Students weighed different tubs of sand to explore what each tub would weigh on a different planet!
