Minnesota 4-H volunteer development: Building resilience in rural youth
Rural communities and families may be affected by a range of unique stressors, including a weak agricultural economy, population loss, healthcare and daycare shortages, and isolation. Addressing rural and farm stress cannot ignore young people who are more aware of and impacted by the family stress than we sometimes imagine. They are worried about their parents, anxious about family finances and health, and unsure of their own future livelihoods.
Join Minnesota 4-H youth development Extension educators Aly Kloeckner (Goodhue County) and Becca Turnquist (Swift County) on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 6:30-8 p.m. to learn how to recognize the signs of stress and build skills to support young people experiencing rural stress-related challenges. 4-H FAQ: What's this?
This month's FAQ: What is a 4-H project?
Kids learn best by doing, that's one of the reasons why 4-Her's are encouraged to do hands on activities in areas that interest them. Project areas are just that, a specific topic area that interests a young person and allows them to dive in and learn more about that topic. Youth drive their own choices. As in the 4-H pledge, they use their:Head to engage actively in learning.
Heart - They demonstrate caring for others and their own learning.
Hands to share their experiences with others.
Health to experience success and learn to support their family, community, and world.
When enrolling in the 4-H program youth are asked to sign up for project areas. The project areas signed up for only mean they have interest in learning more about that topic and that the individual would like to explore it further and potentially do some hands-on learning in that area. There are over 60 project areas for youth to choose from. For any of these, you can make an exhibit to enter at the fair.
Some project areas are more popular than others. Some of the project areas have specific learning opportunities and some are more self guided. To explore and find some additional info about the variety of project areas 4-H has to offer click here. If you have questions or ideas about project learning opportunities please contact 4-H Staff.
