Golden Acorn Award Nominations Now Open!

PTA is a volunteer-driven organization. One of the ways we recognize the outstanding work of our volunteers, is with the Golden Acorn award.

A Golden Acorn Award is presented by a local PTA or council to a school or community volunteer in recognition of their dedication and service to children and youth. Since the beginning of this program in the 1930s, more than 54,000 Golden Acorn Awards have been presented to volunteers throughout Washington state.

Recipients receive a certificate and pin, and a contribution is made in their name to the Washington State PTA Scholarship Program that benefits students.

-

Please submit your nominations for any individuals who have given exemplary volunteer service to children and youth in our school community this year.

Nominations should be submitted to president@nhe-pta.org no later than June 12th and should include a short paragraph describing why you are nominating them.

At Home STEM

Tide Pool Adventures!

This is a great activity for kids and curious adults alike, and it can be enjoyed in any weather without leaving town! It’s also a great educational opportunity to learn about an ecosystem and adaptations of animals who live there.

During the spring and summer, we typically have some very low tides. Any low tide will show interesting tidepools, but the lower it is the more exciting. I definitely pay attention to minus tides, especially ones that are minus more than one foot. When we have tides that are –2 or –3 (a handful of times per year), make a special effort to check them out.

Wednesday May 18th has a - 3.6 foot low tide!!!

What to bring tide pooling?

The most important thing to bring is rubber boots (even in summer), this will protect your feet from getting scraped up on rocks (which happens in sandals), will help keep you from slipping on slippery rocks, and also keeps your feet dry. It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses and a hat, and a field guide so you can identify all those interesting tidepool creatures.

FROM THE SCHOOL

Dear Newport Heights Community Members,

Please remember that our campus is closed during the school day. All visitors to Newport Heights must check in at the front office.

Recently, our school has noticed an increase in non-district personnel on our school grounds when school is in session, specifically in our forest area, by the fifth grade wing doors, and the 117th Ave SE side of the campus near the turf field. For everyone’s safety and pursuant to BSD policy, visitors who have not checked in at the office are not permitted on school grounds while school is in session. School is in session from 8:00am-2:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and 8:00am-12:15pm on Wednesdays.

Families are welcome to wait in front of the school before entry and dismissal each day, but we ask that families not wait at exterior classroom doors, or at other areas of the campus.

Thank you for your help to keep our school grounds safe!
