Dear Henry Families,
We are approaching the end of September this week, and Anna Henry Elementary is busy with grade level instructional lessons, small group classroom interventions, enrichment opportunities, and school community events. This month in September, Gila Monsters are learning about the Character Strong trait “Respect.” Respect is also one of our 4 Bs at Anna Henry. Students are participating in a variety of classroom lessons with their teachers and our school counselor, Ms. Eman. Be sure to ask your student about this learning and what Respect means to them.
It was great to have our families join us last week for parent / teacher conferences with our team. Students and families were able to visit our Scholastic Book Fair during conference week to purchase new reading materials, too. It was also very nice to have families join the Student Council election assembly last Friday, when we listened to candidates in grades 3, 4 & 5 present their speeches. We are immensely proud of all students that demonstrated courage during this public speaking opportunity! Beginning September 25, students in grades 2, 3, 4, & 5 will complete the end of quarter TUSD benchmark assessments to determine student proficiency on grade level standards for the first quarter in both Math and ELA. Please ensure your student is on time for daily instruction.
The first quarter ends on Thursday, October 5, all students will be on Fall Break October 6- 13, and school resumes Monday, October 16. This year we are also offering after school tutoring for students that need this additional support. Classroom teachers will be communicating directly with families about these opportunities, as students are identified using data on academic need, and weekly times vary according to the grade level teams. The plan is start tutoring following Fall Break.
In recent weeks, monsoon storms damaged several of our mature shade trees on both our primary and intermediate playgrounds. Our school is actively pursuing local nonprofits to help our school replace the trees that did not survive the latest monsoon activity. We have confirmed that Trees for Tucson will be donating trees to Anna Henry. The tree planting event will take place in November where all students will be able to participate in planting the trees. More information is coming soon on this. Please consider coming out to help plant the trees if you have the time.
On a final note, we are asking all families to use the drive-through process in both parking lots for morning drop-off. Primary students and siblings should use the north parking lot, and intermediate students should use the south parking lot. Please pull all the way forward to allow the maximum number of vehicles to enter from Igo Way. Vehicles that stop directly in front of the doors create a backup on the street. We are asking that you please do not pass other vehicles when dropping off or picking up students. Your patience will positively impact safety for everyone. Safety is the priority for drop-off and dismissal procedures. Please watch for
students and families that are on foot using the designated crosswalks. We have many students that ride a school bus and use the front parking lot to enter campus.
Respectfully,
Thomas Heminger, principal
