Remember our 2nd Field Trip will be on Thursday, December 1st to the Thinkery. It is important to have conversations with your children about expectations for field trips. How it is important for students to stay with their group at all times and what to do if they get lost. (Safe adults to ask for help).
**Students need to wear their Becker 1st grade T-shirts on Thursday for the Field Trip** Also have your student wear long pants, closed toed shoes and a jacket as it is going to be cold.
If you are an official chaperone, we will need your help with getting students lunches and milk from the Cafeteria and getting ice chests and loading them and unloading them from the Buses. We will be needing 3 official chaperones, but additional parents are welcome to join us after paying their own entrance ticket to the Museum the day of the field trip.
Buses are scheduled to depart around 9:30 and our Thinkery tour starts at 10:30am. Students will eat their lunches in the Thinkery (Very likely, at the park in front of the museum). The scheduled time to go back to Becker is 12:30- 1:00 pm.

PUMPKINS
We need individual size pumpkins for experiments. The more variety the better (size, color, weight etc). We also need carving pumpkins. Each class will need around 10 varieties of pumpkins and 10 carving pumpkins.
Your teacher will send a Google Sheets to sign up for the pumpkins.
We will also need 5 sets of carving tools that we can borrow from families. Please sign up on the sign up sheet.
SOS DAY
On Friday, October 28th. We will have our 1st SOS (Science all day) day. We need each child to bring an adult sized white-t-shirt or shirt (It doesn't have to be new) to make self made lab coats. Please consider bringing extra shirts to share with classmates that are not able to get one. We will also need sharpies.

Reminders:
1st graders are learning how to follow directions in all areas of school and being good listeners. Support your child by asking them how they can help the learning environment when they follow directions, listen to the teacher and ignore distractions.
This week students are going to P.E. with another class. That means that there are 2 classes at the Gym or the cafeteria at the same time. It is important that students follow directions at school at all times and this includes keeping their hands to themselves.
Help your child keep all toys and cards home to minimize distractions at school. We have noticed many children bringing pokemon cards, pocket toys among others.
All students should come to school with closed running shoes. Students have P.E. Every day we do physical activities. It is difficult for students to run with slip sandals and hard boots.
It is time for parent-teacher conferences. Your homeroom teacher will share a sign up with families to select a time and a date on the week of September 26th.

SLEEP. We have noticed several students being very tired and even falling asleep at school. It is important that 1st graders sleep 9-12 hours every night. You can find more info in this link.

At school we are learning to be assertive when solving problems. When students have a problem, we teach them to use their words in the following format:
I don’t like it when you ____________
You may only________.
Next time _________.
It will be great for students to practice this format at home, so that they can feel prepared when faced with a conflict.

This week we will continue with our MAP TESTING for English Reading, Spanish Reading and Math. Each class will be testing on different dates. Your teacher will let you know.
DRILLS. Every month we are scheduled to do different types of drills. We explained that those drills are just practice and assure them that there is not a real danger but that we need to be prepared. If you want to learn more about it please follow this Austin ISD Emergency Management Drills page.

Insect repellent. If your child needs insect repellent for Green Classroom, please apply it before the school starts. It also helps to wear long pants as there are plenty of mosquitos right now.
