What is Naviance?
Every student at Beckman High School has access to Naviance to assist with College and Career planning. Naviance’s web-based software provides students with a variety of features, including college research and matching tools, course planning, career assessment and personality tests, and surveys to help students connect what they are doing in school to what they would like to do once they complete their education. Naviance provides additional functionality to school counselors to track the progress of individual students, communicate and collaborate with students and families, or create reports on their entire student population. Additionally, Naviance’s integration with "The Common Application" facilitates the submission of college applications, as well as online submission of transcripts, school forms and recommendations through Naviance eDocs. Naviance also houses data used to create scattergrams which show the acceptance history of students within a particular high school to a specific college or university using the historical average GPAs and test scores from the high school. A Naviance scattergram is a scatter plot that shows students within a high school who were accepted, denied and wait-listed by a specific college using symbols in the graph legend. Girls Inc. at Beckman
Girls Inc.® of Orange County has been a respected member of the non-profit community for over 60 years. The mission of Girls Inc. is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. We put our mission into practice through the Girls Inc. experience that equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow into healthy, educated and independent adults. Beckman has partnered up with Girls Inc. for nine years and a few of our students have received scholarships of $5,000 from them in the past. This year Girls Inc. delivered the College Bound curriculum to roughly 49 students who participated in the program. The emphasis of the College Bound curriculum is to provide a foundation of knowledge regarding college entrance requirements and how to finance a college education. In addition, College Bound exposes its participants to a breadth of choices regarding college majors and career opportunities. The College Bound curriculum is synthesized into a developmentally appreciate and palatable organization format which supports the connection of the participant own interest to real world college majors and careers
Summer College Readiness in the Career Center
This summer the Career Center held college readiness appointments for 255 incoming seniors along with a series of weekly college and career workshops. Seniors had the opportunity to begin the college planning process by discussing the steps to complete their applications including the essays, access to Naviance accounts to submit letters of recommendations, reviewing deadlines and outlining Community College options, financial aid, and scholarships. Six different workshops open to all students were offered on Fridays including:
• How to be a successful college student (Irvine Valley College)
• Community College and Financial Aid 101 (Santiago Canyon College)
• Common Application and Private Colleges (Chapman University)
• Benefits of Attending an out of State school (University of Oregon)
• Career Exploration (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising)
• UC system and Personal Insight Prompts (University of Riverside)
The workshops were a huge success with over 350 students and parents attending to receive valuable information from the presenters. We have been excited to share this information with our students as they prepare for the college admissions process!
