Robotics Team Visits English Landing
On Thursday, March 7th, middle schoolers from a community-based kids robotics team, Galactech FTC Team #5227, came to English Landing to share their robots and information about the FIRST robotics programs with 4th and 5th graders. FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an international organization providing competitive robotics opportunities for kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. Galactech participates in the FIRST Tech Challenge level of competition for middle and high school students (grade 7-12). They are the rookie team sponsored by the Kansas City Robotics Foundation, a Northland-based STEM education non-profit. There are also FIRST LEGO League teams available at the Park Hill middle schools (for ages 9-14,) and both Park Hill South and Park Hill High Schools have FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams (grades 9-12). Students and families who would like more information about trying a summer robotics club, or applying for a competitive robotics team for next Fall can contact the Kansas City Robotics Foundation at info@kcroboticsfoundation.org. We can also provide information about starting your own FIRST LEGO League team for your elementary school-aged kids. No programming or STEM experience is required to start a team.

Fifth Grade Eagles always SOAR!
Mr. O'Connor's Room: We are wrapping up our Social Studies- Social Groups unit with a one-pager project. Students are showing the past and current challenges and achievements of Immigrants, Native Americans, Women and the Civil Rights Movement.
Ms. Peters' Room:Students are organizing the research they have done about an independently chosen debatable topic. They will use this research to write an essay and create a PSA.
Mr. Sanders' Room: We are working collaboratively to research a persuasive topic that appeals to an audience, contains evidence/statistics, and offers a counterclaim. After reading and researching their topic, each group is working to craft a commercial under 90 seconds to persuade their audience through their argument and images.

Celebrating Birthdays at English Landing!
Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):
We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.
At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Steczak, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
