Digital Citizenship
Helping your child stay safe online
Internet Safety
Parents and teachers are beginning to engage in more activities to further protect students when using the internet.
The first few steps to take include:
1. Having meaningful conversations with your kids about making smart decisions in their digital lives.
2. Using social media with your child.
3. Setting expectations and rehearsing them.
4. Modeling the media behavior you want to see in your kids.
Harness the Power of Technology
Check - Check what they're doing by letting them know that you will, not to catch them, but to help them.
Chat - Follow up with a chat about what you find, or don't find, when looking through browsing histories, apps, etc.

"Think First"
What people post can be thought of as a digital "tattoo" that is persistent and searchable.

Start Early with Digital Citizenship
Why?
92% post their real name to the profile they use most often.
84% post their interests, such as books, movies, or music they like.
82% post their date of birth.
62% post their relationship status.
24% post videos of themselves.
But Why Does Online Safety Matter?
Media should work for you and your parenting style. When media is used appropriately and thoughtfully, it can enhance everyday life. But when used inappropriately or without thought, media can displace many important activities such as face-to-face interaction, family-time, outdoor-play, exercise, and sleep.
Creating a Personalized Family Media Use Plan, you can be aware of when you are using media to achieve your purpose. This requires parents to think about what they want those purposes to be!
