Mercantilism vs Capitalism & Internet vs Colombian Exchange

Mercantilism

The British had an empire to run and the way they were planning on doing it was by trading. British colonies were the moneymakers for their country. The British put restrictions on how the colonies spent money. They have limits on what they can produce, whose ships they could use, and who they could trade to. The Navigation Act, (All European goods who were getting shipped to America had to be shipped through England,) is an act that lead to rebellions and corruption in the colonies. Smugglers eventually started to bring in goods from others and they would bribe the officials so they would get food and money from both sides. Taxes were created and horrified certain colonists.

Mercantilism

Pros:

  • It was made to enrich countries.
  • Made to achieve a favorable balance of trade.
  • To maintain domestic employment.
Cons:

  • There's always a risk of local raw materials running out.
  • The system is quite inefficient.
  • It encourages the hoarding of resources.

Mercantilism

VS

Capitalism

Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. Efficient free markets and they claim promote individual freedom. Capitalism dates all the way back to the middle ages in western Europe, the Netherlands and England when they first created joint-stock companies driving up commerce and trade.

Capitilism

Pros:

  • Economic freedom helps political freedom.
  • There are no better alternatives.
  • Companies can create their own prices for their own goods.
Cons:

  • Abuse of the system- people take advantage of the freedom
  • It creates a money-oriented economy- tend to focus to much on money making
  • It doesn't create an equal opportunity for all.

Summary

Overall with this pairing, this shows that Mercantilism was used earlier than capitalism. Both have issues with bad behavior because mercantilism encouraged hoarding and capitalism had abuse to it's system. Both mercantilism and capitalism worked during their time, but they still have issues, and capitalism is still used today.

Internet

Used to contact friends, family, and meet new people. Created in the early 1960’s. We can make the internet whatever we want it to be, we can mold it, shape it, and connect to people. Over 100 million people have used the internet. The internet has revolutionized the communications world by making new concepts. They made the computer, radio, and telegraph which changed the world; it allows people from different sides of the world to communicate with each other.

Internet

Pros:

  • Communication with people all over the world.
  • Information was relayed throughout the world quicker.
  • Comfort- can almost buy anything over the internet.
Cons:

  • Addiction- everyone can't get off the internet or off games.
  • Personal information can get stolen by hackers= identity theft.
  • Things can travel around the internet so quick that sometimes shouldn't be spread around.
HISTORY OF THE INTERNET

VS

Colombian Exchange

The columbian exchange was named after Christopher Columbus. The columbian exchange was the exchange of Americans trading with European countries. The columbian exchange made it cheaper to grow more food. Without the Columbian Exchange, the United States would never be the same. Both continents exchanged plants, animals, diseases, and technology. The effects of the Columbian exchange resulted in advancements in agricultural production, evolution of war, increased, mortality rate, and education. One important piece of technology that was exchanged during this time was the written alphabet.

Columbian Exchange

Pros:

  • It brought crops to and from Europe to America.
  • Livestock was brought from Europe to America.
  • Trading pigs was good for the Americans because they didn't have a main source of meat.
Cons:

  • The Europeans also brought many types of diseases to America, such as smallpox, measles, and malaria.
  • Thousands of indians died through the diseases being transported to America.
  • Human rights were abused by the slave trades.

Summary

Overall with this pairing, this shows that the internet and the Columbian Exchange were both ways to spread word and how to transfer goods. The Columbian Exchange spread around diseases that shouldn't of been spread around, just like how the internet can make something viral that shouldn't be.

So What?

What we've learned from this information is that mercantilism helped enrich countries but it could backfire at times and make the country lose its raw goods. Capitalism allowed businesses to create their own prices for their goods but, the opportunity isn't there for all. The Columbian Exchange brought crops to America but the price came with the crops, it brought smallpox and many other diseases. The internet lets us communicate with others whenever we want but, others just can't get off of it.

Now What?

We don't think that the world is as safe as it could be. Back during the Columbian Exchange, diseases were traveling all over the world and couldn't be cured because the technology and time were not advanced at the time. And that's still happening now a days because America imports and exports goods from all over the world. Just a little while back in 2015, Ebola was supposedly traveling from Africa to America. This was happening because doctors from America were going to Africa to cure people with Ebola, but then doctors were bringing it back. America needs to watch out for what they're bringing to the United States, or else the world is going to die just by diseases.

How can Technology save Humanity?

Technology can save humanity because it has a chance to cure diseases that can't be cured now. If everybody has the cure, then there will be more healthy people. Also, technology could help people get around better in the future, like the disabled for example. Like better wheelchairs, or scooters. Technology could also improve transferring of information to people all around the world. Lastly, it could also help businesses in the future.
