Michelangelo
A GREAT ARTIST OF THE RENAISSANCE
Background
Michelangelo was born in the village of Caprese, near Arezzo, he was second of five sons. His father came from a good family but had little money. He was considered by some art scholars the greatest and draftsman of all time.
Achievements
- While he was alive he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It was one of the most beautiful paintings he had ever painted.
- He sculpted the statue of David that was 17 feet tall.
- During his life he painted the Last Judgement for the same chapel's altar wall. (the Sistine Chapel.)
- One of his carvings the Moses lasted somewhere between 1513-1515.
Interesting Facts
He wrote countless letters throughout his careers, some 490 letters have survived and contain original signatures. He was one of the first artists to develop a cult celebrity status even before his death. Towards the end of hid life, he destroyed many of his sketches not wanting people to know how hard he worked.
Impact on Today
He taught the world to appreciate art for art's sake. He was also known for helping to establish the Renaissance Period. While in the 17th century the power and drama of his style influenced baroque artists. http://www.history.com/topics/michelangelo
