U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (TX-03) this week announced the 2015-2016 Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC) participants.

The 87 Collin County high school students were selected by a community board to serve on the council due to their outstanding leadership skills, academic performance, extracurricular activity participation and community service.

“We’ve got a great group of students this year – they’re bright, talented and highly driven to make an impact in their community,” Johnson said in a release. “Now more than ever, it’s imperative that our young people not only understand how our democracy works, but get involved so that they can make positive, wise contributions to our country.”

Johnson created CYAC in 2004 to gain insight from students in the 3rd District and to inspire civic-minded young adults to achieve their full potential, according to a release on the announcement. Johnson had “hundreds of applicants” for the one-year program, he said.

Among the 87 students are the following from Plano Senior High School:

Joey Basdeo

Tanner Cedrone
