Delivering the Heart of Homeschooling

Week of April 29, 2019

Big picture

Hello Riverside County!

It's warming up in Riverside County! I can't wait for all the summertime activities! Do you school through the summer or take a break? We always focus a lot on reading and work on math here and there. I also like to use the summer for bigger projects that we can't get to throughout the year. It's always tricky finding the best balance. I am putting a lot of thought into my summer plans now. We should share our ideas and learn from each other!

Head over to our Facebook page and share your thoughts on summertime plans and activities. We'd love to hear from you!

Test Prep Day in Temecula!

Can I just toot the horn for our Inspire Teachers?!? The Temecula team hosted a Test Prep Day this week for all students. I brought my two, a fifth grader and third grader, and they LOVED it! They’re anxious testers and our awesome HSTs helped them understand the test and ways to prep themselves with fun games and helpful crafts with wonderful little reminders ❤️

As an Inspire parent, thank you, Teachers, for caring ❤️

Melissa Webb's FREE Test Prep for Writing Success Webinar!

Last night I had the privilege of attending Melissa Webb's online parent webinar. I am so grateful I did! Her webinar was very informative for our upcoming state testing. Three of my kids are testing this year and this webinar was just what I needed!

You're in luck! It was recorded! Here is the information below...

Tonight I hosted my LAST live, online event for the Test Prep for Writing Success 2019 parent webinar. And, what a special and wonderful group we had. THANK YOU to all who gave of their time and energy.

If you missed it, no worries! We remembered to record it. And, as promised, before my head hits the pillow, here is all you requested.

TEST PREP for WRITING SUCCESS WEBINAR - VIDEO RECORDING (90 Minutes)

Also, when you are done watching the video, no doubt you'll be ready to dive into the FREE sets of lessons I have created for you. To access those:

==> Go to writeonwebb.teachable.com

==> Choose the Test Prep for Writing Success Course toward the bottom of the page

==> Click on "Enroll in Course for $39"

==> On the Order Summary page, enter TP2019where you see "Add Coupon"

==> Complete the registration

==> Access the three courses. Feel free to start with any of the three bundled options. My recommendation is to start with your child's "weakest link."

Finally, some of you shared an interest in having me save you a spot for my ONLINE WRITING PROGRAM for the FALL of 2019. I would LOVE to have you and your kiddo join our community. Sign up if you are interested.

Please remember to fill out the CHPA Membership form for your family and turn it into

your HST by May 1st. If you need more time because you aren’t going to see your HST

this week, that’s fine, but please turn it in as soon as possible. We are hoping to conduct

elections for board members in the next month or so.

CHPA is a nonprofit organization consisting of Inspire homeschool parents who support

Inspire Charter Schools’ mission and vision of parent choice and personalized learning

for each unique child. Some of the goals include involvement and volunteerism of parents

Great News for Readers!

Inspire is excited to announce that we now offer Accelerated Reader for students in TK-12th grade! The cost for this program is just $20 per student in instructional funds and can be requested through your HST. Please note this program does not include books.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps parents manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child selects a book rather than having one assigned to them and reads it at their own pace. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. They may also read articles of interest right on the screen. When finished, your child will take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) In addition, when an LP meeting comes up, you can easily print up the list of books that your child read and share it with your HST.

If you are interested in signing up for Accelerated Reader, please let your HST know. They will be happy to assist you.

Every Kid in a Park!

Did you know? There is a federal public lands youth initiative to get all 4th graders and their families to experience the places that are home to our country’s natural treasures, rich history, and vibrant culture.

To help engage and create our next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates, Federal Land Management agencies, launched the Every Kid in a Park initiative. The immediate goal is to provide an opportunity for each and every 4th-grade student across the country to experience their federal public lands and waters in person throughout the school year.

Every year, beginning September 1, all kids in the fourth grade have access to their own Every Kid in a Park pass at www.everykidinapark.gov. This pass provides free access to national parks across the country.

The Every Kid in a Park pass is good for the 4th grade school year, until August 31, 2019. Information on obtaining the pass is available by visiting www.everykidinapark.gov.

This Week's OSP (Online Subscription Package) Spotlight: Discovery Education Science Techbook w/Streaming Plus

The 2019-2020 Online Subscription Package (OSP) options have been finalized, and we’re spotlighting every option - every week!

This week we spotlight a science curriculum ~ Discovery Education Science Techbook w/Streaming Plus!

Discovery Education Science Techbooks are full online science courses for grades K through 12th. Access to the Science Techbook also includes their Steaming Plus service, which gives supplemental online content in a variety of subjects and grade levels.

Science Techbook: "Discovery Education Science Techbook™ is a powerful, simple-to-use, digital program that boosts the rigor and relevance of your K-12 Science program, fuels digital transformation, and supports implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Built around the 5E model of instruction, Techbook is a non-linear curriculum pathway that promotes inquiry-based learning, enhances critical thinking, and improves student achievement."

Streaming Plus: "Discovery Education Streaming Plus is a comprehensive K-12 digital service that motivates students to learn and helps teachers in every content area to transform their instruction. Containing thousands of standards-aligned resources, Streaming Plus provides teachers with the tools to teach students to think critically about the content they use, see, and experience in their daily lives and to ask questions about the world around them."

Also, Inspire is only offering the Science Techbook through the OSP because it is the only Techbook they have for all grades (K-12). We will have the Social Studies and Math Techbooks available to add-on for the grades they cover. Social Studies covers 6th through 8th and Math covers 6th through 12th. These will not include the Streaming Plus, as the Streaming Plus is only included through the OSP with the Science Techbook.

You will receive access for each student who opts-in for the 2019-2020 school year. For more details on this OSP option and all the other OSP subscriptions, head over to the OSP Handbook.

Sharing The Homeschool Heart... What is your why?

When I started to think about the possibility of homeschooling 13 years ago, I realized I needed a "why?" The more time I spent researching and educating myself about home education, the brighter my why became.

First, I desired to spend more time with my children. I knew the time was fleeting and I wanted every moment I could get to enjoy them and to build a lasting bond. I also quickly realized that I had a strong desire to give my children a joy for learning new things and the ability to be their own educator. I knew that giving them the skills to be self-learners would provide them with an advantage throughout many parts of their lives.

I believe starting with a "why" is an important foundational role in every homeschool family. Once you know, you can dive into homeschool philosophy. What is the best way to teach your kids and how are you going to do it? For our family, finding our "why" and "how" has made all the difference.

Over time, all of these big decisions have culminated in a walk down a beautiful and bumpy little path of homeschooling. Along the way, we have all changed. I have certainly changed the most. Our mindset and expectations have morphed over the years and created our own Family style of the homeschool day. It's a beautiful thing to watch. Don't fight against those changes. Pay close attention to the process and see where the bumpy little homeschool path leads you. Don't let fear and worry control your day. Let it guide you to the next step. Are you afraid your fifth grader will never be able to write an essay? Don't assume you have failed and you can't do it. Partner with another homeschool mom for some co-op time or call up one of our amazing vendors for some help. Use the bumps as helpful little stepping stones to the next fantastic stop on your homeschool journey!

Being free to choose what is best for each one of my kids, individually, has created a better environment for home education. Developing my "why" and then following through with "how" can build just the right amount of confidence into you to thrust your homeschool lifestyle to the next level. And, as I always say, a confident homeschool parent can change the world, one cute little kiddo at a time. Confidence is key. Build that up in yourself and watch your family soar!

Have a beautiful week of growing and learning together!

-Candice

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 10 to 6 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 6 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey.
