PE
Developing lifelong fitness habits is an important goal of PE. Our Woodin Mileage Club is a helpful means to this end. As we wrap up the calendar year our Wildcats have logged almost 3,000 miles by walking, jogging, or running 14,000 laps around our lower field. 93% of 1st-5th grade students have received their purple toe token and chain by completing 5 miles. Students are encouraged to use Mileage Club to build cardio-respiratory endurance and receive different color toe tokens for every 5 miles completed.
We often complete laps during our PE time and students also complete laps during their long recess, if they choose.
For the month of December we plan to teach the health related Components of Fitness (Cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscle strength, muscle endurance, body composition) and the skill related fitness benchmarks (Reaction time, coordination, speed, power, agility, and balance) through a variety of grade-level appropriate activities.
When we get back from Winter Break, intermediate students will be asked to reflect and develop a fitness goal.
MUSIC
Students are finishing out the year studying song form and responding to music used in world holidays, celebrations and traditions.
We are already looking ahead to Martin Luther King Jr. day in January; your student will have access to practice materials (for a virtual performance) through Schoology or Seesaw - any practice they can do at home is appreciated!
LIBRARY
Students in all grades have continued to preview and/or read the Washington book nominees in the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book, Otter and Young Reader’s Choice categories. Our primary students have read three additional stories from our list of 20: This Way, Charlie, Federico and the Wolf, and Crossings: Extraordinary Structures for Extraordinary Animals. We have now read 5 total and are excited to hear more! *Important Update: If your kinder, first or second grader ever misses library and would like to hear the nominee for the week (or they didn’t miss library but just want to hear a story again), be sure to check out our Woodin WCCPBA site - each time we read a new nominee, I will post a video read aloud of that book here. Be sure to bookmark it and check back often: WCCPBA 2021
Third graders have now previewed all 6 of the Otter nominees and each class will get to vote on which one they would like to read together in library. Our hope is to read several of them together in preparation for voting in the spring. Students in 4th and 5th grade have continued previewing the YRCA nominees and are encouraged to read as many titles as they can throughout the year.
HOUR OF CODE - December 6-10, 2021
This week, all Woodin students participated in the global event known as Hour of Code, which takes place in December each year. This awareness event started in 2013 as a way to introduce computer science to children of all ages and teach them the basics of computer coding. This is always an exciting event for our students and they may have come home sharing all the cool coding skills they learned and practiced. If they are interested in doing more coding activities, they can visit our Hour of Code site (grade-level activities are just suggestions - students can try any game that interests them!). If you are interested in learning more about Hour of Code, please visit www.code.org
COUNSELING
Happy December! This month we’ve been focusing on many different important skills for building and maintaining friendships. In K-2 we’re learning about the important characteristics of good friends and that to have good friends, we need to be good friends ourselves. We are also learning about problem solving with friends and how to make sure we include others.
In 3-5th grade, we’ve also learned more about how we interact with each other. We’ve been thinking about what empathy means and why it’s important, as well as understanding our own identities and how that influences building relationships with others.
Building positive relationships can be one of the best ways of supporting mental health. As we look forward to time together at home over the Winter Break, here are a few resources to help facilitate building wonderful relationships at home:
I hope everyone has a wonderful month and restful time together during the break. Please always feel free to reach out to me at (425) 408-5454 or janderson3@nsd.org.
Health Room News
Winter is quickly approaching, hoping everyone is keeping warm and ready for our holiday break.
November was busy, all students were screened for vision and hearing. A HUGE thank you to the wonderful parent volunteers who spent the day helping us move classes through the library. Thanks also to Mrs. Chmiel for lending the library for our screening. Referral letters and follow-up calls have happened. If you have need of a list for eye doctor referrals, please contact me.
We also had many generous donations to our Food Bank. Evergreen Academy brought over lots of items, and their 5th graders helped put items away. Arbor Church is continuing to give our Food Bank weekly support. Please come to the Health Room and I can give you items from our Food Bank, if you are needing extra help with food and personal items.
We continue to experience positive COVID-19 cases, and we are working to keep all students healthy. Here is updated information to help with some questions and resources you may need.
COVID Vaccines:
The health room continues to see questions on the expanded COVID vaccine availability for 5–11 year-old's. Everyone age 5 years and older is currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 vaccine options for teens and children include:
- Pfizer: age 5 years and older
- Johnson & Johnson: age 18 years and older
- Moderna: age 18 years and older
There are several info links on our district website page for COVID vaccine location options at: https://www.nsd.org/covid19/vaccinations
Additionally, if you have questions about COVID vaccination and your child, it is highly recommended to reach out to your child’s primary care provider to discuss the current COVID vaccine recommendations as it relates to your child’s current health plan.
Mobile Clinics at Your Student's School (5-11 years of age):
NSD continues planning and scheduling clinics that will take place at your student’s school during the school day based on availability of community resources. Check back periodically at the following link for more details and updates:
https://www.nsd.org/covid19/vaccinations/covid-19-vaccination-clinics-5-11
Please continue to report symptoms and test results to the office and the Health Room.
