What's going on in class?

In Math we are currently in our 3rd module. This module has students working on positive and negative numbers using number lines to help determine which value is least and which is greatest. We will have a quiz on Monday (this keeps changing with the weather!) to wrap up this section. I hope everyone enjoyed their break! It is awesome to have the kiddos back and working with them!

Language Arts

Since returning to school we have began our 3rd unit. In Unit 3 we will be answering the question "How can people still achieve the American Dream when faced with injustice?" The past few weeks we have been working on background knowledge to help students better understand the book we will be reading. The topics we have been researching include The Great Depression, sharecropping, and Jim Crow laws.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the book we are currently reading. We will be using quotes from this book as evidence to support our argumentative writing toward the end of the unit. I encourage you to have conversations with your student about the book, injustice, and the "American Dream".

Team 2 Scientists are becoming Chemists! So far this semester, we have completed our safety unit and tested over it, as well as doing an initial exploratory lab to learn about physical and chemical properties. The next topic will be classifying matter (atoms, compounds, mixtures).

As always, safety will continue to be a priority in the classroom. This includes not only proper use of materials, but also listening and paying attention to directions.

Social Studies

This week in social studies, the students continued learning about Ancient Greece. The students learned more about Greek culture in the two countries of Athens and Sparta. On Wednesday and Thursday, the students learned about the Peloponnesian War, which was a war between Athens and Sparta. On Friday, the students began a research project on the website Pixton. They will get to choose a topic from Ancient Greece such as the Olympics, Greek Mythology, etc. Next week, the students will work on their projects and continue learning about Ancient Greece.

Guest Teachers

Please remind your student that if there is a guest teacher in one of their classes to be as kind and helpful as possible. As stated in the JCMS Behavior Management Chart, "Noncompliance with a substitute teacher" will be a Level 2 referral. Students are only asked to take responsibility for their own behavior.

Visiting Author - Kimberly Byrd

Students in Mrs. Green and Ms. Howe's WINN classes had the opportunity to listen to Mrs. Kimberly Byrd discuss her journey to become a published author. She brought her handwritten notes she started in middle school, and is now working her second book. Mrs. Byrd described the freedom that writing gives her and how she hopes that each student will find and foster their passions as well. Her book is available on Amazon and Kindle. Thank you to Mrs. Woods (JCMS librarian) for coordinating this opportunity!

Students of the Week!

Each week teachers will be nominating Team 2 students who demonstrate positive character, work ethic, leadership, and or overall growth/ improvements. Below are our Students of the Week!

Student Expectations

Your student should wear their ID daily on a lanyard. If your student has lost their student ID, they may purchase a new one through the main office for $3.

Please charge tablets every night. Many students are leaving tablets in their locker. If your family would prefer that the tablet stays at school, please contact your student's CAT time teacher to make arrangements for secure storage and charging.

No Name Papers

We have had several no name papers turned in this year. If a student thinks they turned in an assignment but it shows missing in the grade book it is likely they didn't put a name on it. Please remind your child to always put their name, class, and hour on their papers.

Hallway Procedures

JCMS has updated hallway procedures during class. Please contact your student's CAT time teacher if you have questions.

Team 2 Expectations

Team 2 is consistent in our expectations in all our courses to create the best and most conducive learning environment for all students. We create these expectations and go over them multiple times with the team to insure that all students are able to be successful. We encourage you to review the expectations and discuss them with your student.

Students will be sending out weekly grade updates each Friday via e-mail. Please make sure your student has your email address as well as it being updated in Skyward. Parents will also have access to student grades at all times through the Skyward website or app. If you are unable to access Skyward please contact the office for further help.
