Pastor Mary Beth’s Musings
I attended Chancel Choir rehearsal last night to rehearse with the new “women’s choir” that will make its debut on Sunday morning as a part of Music and Arts Sunday. It was a LOT of fun! First of all, Ian Gill chose a very accessible song for those of us who don’t come regularly to choir rehearsal. Secondly, there’s a little bit of “choreography” (you’ll have to come and see on Sunday!). And third, I just flat out love to sing with other people who love to sing! I’m really grateful that Ian made “space” for some of us to join in for this special Sunday.
The use of music and the arts (drama, storytelling, visual art) in worship has been around for a long time. The “passion play” originated as a way to teach the story of Jesus’ Passion to an illiterate congregation. Think of the acoustics of a great cathedral allowing music to soar and swell. Stained glass and iconography tell the stories of the Bible in many beautiful worship spaces. We are blessed at Vista Ridge UMC to have people who are passionate about drama and visual art and music and to have some amazing staff people and volunteers who every week offer music as a way to enter into worshipping God and celebrating God’s goodness.
There will be great music and drama this Sunday as almost all of our music and arts groups will have a part in leading worship. (Our Music Makers will be leading in worship during Children’s Sabbath on October 23.) For those of you who know that you currently follow the Sensate Pathway to connect with God, this is your kind of Sunday! But know, there will also be space for silence, for reflection, for prayer, and for listening as we come together as the Body of Christ.
I’m praying for you. I hope you’re praying for me.
Glory to God!
Pastor Mary Beth
Vote on Potential Land Sale on Sunday
A Church Conference will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, October 16, to vote on whether to accept an offer for the purchase of 4.2 acres on the east end of our property. A developer wants to build townhomes. Individuals need to be church members and must be present to vote. A ballot will be provided upon sign in and verification of membership.
Fall Festival Trunks/Donations
Volunteers and donations are needed for the upcoming Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat event! Help make this a special day for our children and visitors by hosting a trunk and treats, or running a game (supplies and prizes provided). Donations of candy, small trinkets/prizes and 2-liter sodas also are needed. Sign up to participate below or on the back of Sunday's worship attendance card. Fall Festival is set for 4-6 p.m. Sunday, October 30.
Sisters in Christ Study
Women’s Fellowship Social
The women of the church will meet at 7 p.m. Friday, October 28, for bingo night at the home of Nikki Monkman-Lou. Bring an appetizer to share. Come enjoy a time of fellowship and get to know other women in the church. RSVP to Nikki Lou, lou.shoes@gmail.com.
Usher/Greeter Training on October 30
Those interested in serving as an usher or greeter on a rotational basis are invited to a short training at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, October 30. Current ushers and greeters are encouraged to attend. Research shows that the average church visitor makes up his or her mind whether to return within 3-4 minutes of walking into a church. The training will provide volunteers with tools to assist our visitors.
All Saints Sunday
Vista Ridge UMC will remember family members who have passed away this year during All Saints Sunday on November 6. Please list loved ones on the back of Sunday's attendance card or contact the church office.
Morgan Moore CCA Food Drive
Volunteers are needed Saturday, November 12, to assist with the Morgan Moore CCA Food Drive. Sign up to help below. The food drive is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Albertsons, 1087 W. Main St., in Lewisville. Volunteers assist with greeting customers, handing out flyers and accepting food donations. This food drive was created by the late Morgan Moore, a former church member.
