The Battle Of Antietam. September 17, 1862.

Antietam was the deadliest single day to be at war. The Union had a plan called "The Anaconda Plan" which was to surround the Confederacy with leaving them nowhere to go and no one to trade with, squeezing them like an anaconda. The Confederacy's plan was to invade the north and make Britain join them, since they were trading. This battle was 8 hours long. With Generals, Robert E. Lee, for confederacy And George McClellan for Union. First, Lee split his Troops into four, to confuse McClellan, but one of the Confederate Officers lost his copy of instructions and two union solider's found it and brought it back to McClellan, though he did not attack right away. Lee withdrew across the river on September 18, 1862 with 21,000 dead, or 80%. Sunken road was now called "Bloody Lane" after the battle. The Antietam creek "Victory" led to the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln. This battle was the point that made the war about slavery.
The Battle of Gettysburg. July 1, 1863.

The battle of Gettysburg was the most deadliest battle of war. In Gettysburg, General Lee hoped to avoid fighting in the area because he did not know the area well. George with the union's plan was still the Anaconda plan, to surround and squeeze the south. While the South's plan was to drive the Union from the hills named "Big Round Top and Little Round Top". The Battle of Gettysburg ended with 51,000 solider's died in battle. President Lincoln used the National Cemetery to show dedication and honor to the fallen (union) Gettysburg solider's and redefine the purpose of war.
The Battle of Vicksburg. May 18, 1863
Generals, Robert E. Lee, Confederacy and Ulysses S. Grant, Union
The Union army surrounded 30,000 Confederate troops, Ulysses s. Grant, for the union began a siege of the town preventing food and cargo from reaching Vicksburg. While Union Gunships on the river supported Grants troops, this battle lasted 47 days. With 9,000 Union solider's deaths and 10,000 Confederate, mostly from starvation and disease. 20 Vicksburg Citizens were also killed. Confederacy lost port Hudson in Louisiana, it's last stronghold on the Mississippi RIver.
