Learner Profile for May
The learner profile that is being highlighted during the month of May is the character trait of being knowledgeable. Students exhibiting this trait ask questions and learn about many topics. They explore a variety of interests, ideas and concepts.
Language Workshop
We have completed the last 3 books in unit 7. The theme of this unit is inquiry. Through inquiry we gain new information from a variety of sources. We can then communicate our understanding and learn from one another. During this unit we primarily used non-fiction books to learn about motion, race cars, and jets. This unit also included two fictional stories that highlighted inspiring children who used their passion for learning to go above and beyond in creating amazing vehicles for community competitions.
Literacy
May is a busy month with lots of year-end assessments. We completed the PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) assessment. We are wrapping up our final checks on high frequency words. Thank you so much for your support with this throughout the year. It has had a big impact on the success of our young learners in attaining proficiency in this area. We are finishing our last reading assessments (also known as running records). It is so exciting to see how much growth the children have made over the course of the year!
In addition to testing, we continue to work in our guided reading groups and apply other reading skills utilizing a variety of activities. We have revisited syllables for a final time this school year. We have used our knowledge of CVC words to create word ladders. This entails making a series of new words by changing one letter at a time (for example, ten--pen--pin--pan--fan--fun). We have also been focusing on determining main idea and supporting details of nonfiction passages.
Math Workshop
In preparation for our MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test in math we briefly revisited shapes. We also touched on time to the hour, fractions, graphing and comparing quantities using the symbols > = <. We have now completed our spring MAP testing. Reports of the results will be available with report cards.
We have also been working on composing and decomposing numbers. We have been taking apart numbers less than 10 and finding 2 or more numbers that add up to 10. We have done this using fun card games as well as engaging activities on the Book Creator and Showbie apps on our i-pads. Our kindergartners have become quite the mathematicians!
Thank you!
Grandparents' Day -- May 11 was an exciting day at Rose Glen! It is always a special treat for our little ones when their grandparents come to visit. Thank you to all the grandparents who joined us that morning. A very special outpouring of gratitude to those who welcomed other children whose grandparents were unable to attend and included them in the morning’s activities. Thanks also to the families who helped out with this event. It was a truly memorable day!
Zoo -- We had a great day at the zoo! This trip is always a highlight of the kindergarten year. What a great way to lead into the final days of the school year. Thanks to all the chaperones who helped make this trip a success!
High Frequency Words
Thanks again for your support in helping your child learn all the kindergarten high frequency words. The children worked so hard and made great progress! Feel free to access the list here to use as practice over the summer in order to try and beat the summer slide in skills.
Rose Glen online directory
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. Hopefully you have already signed up for the family directory. If you have not, please take a few minutes to do so.
