The Golden Age Of Ancient Greece
What did Greece accomplish?
Greece has contributed much to the world before and today. It was a very powerful and influential land at that time.It actually wasn't a united country though. It was filled with little city states all isolated from each other cause of the rough geography. Two of them were very strong and well known. They are Athens and Sparta. They gave much to our world like sciences, literature, philosophy, math, and strong militaries.Athens was the birth place of democracy which is pretty much how the western world came to be today.Sparta had a very strong military which has also influenced many other countries forces.I feel without Greece our world would be very different.we could still be living under kings if it weren't for these great people.
Architecture
The Greeks were very good at architecture. They created many types of buildings. Most famously is the Parthenon. It was made with marble and it is short but has pillars.many countries still use this design such as the Lincoln memorial in the u.s
Arts
Greek arts are some of the best works in history. They knew how to create statues easily by also using marble. Many of them are dedicated to Greek gods and Famous people. They have also influenced other countries and have used these for their own arts as well.
Math
Greeks also invented many forms of modern math and they loved to do them. They helped create things like algebra and geometry. In fact most math that we perform in our country is actually originated from Greece.
The Golden Age Of Ancient Greece
Athens Vs Sparta
These two states were very different from each other.Athens was a state that had a democratic government where only male citizens over 18 could vote. But however women and slaves were still given much freedom and could have educations and jobs.the people there were very interested in things like science and art.Sparta is way different though. It was run by kings that were believed to be the smartest. of their people. All males there were required to join the military at age 7.they remained there until they reached age 60.However women and slaves here also were pretty free and had opportunities too.And eventually a war broke out between the two. Thanks to Spartas military, they defeated Athens and captured it.I believe Athens still was a better state though.even though Sparta managed to win many wars and even win a war 20 to 1 against Persia.Athens still felt like a better home.People were more free and had a lot of choices in life.I also love Greek arts and history so that's another reason. And Athens is the capital of modern day Greece.Sparta still exists as a city but its nowhere as near as important or powerful now so in my opinion Athens won the battle in the end.
Socrates
Socrates was a The very first Greek philospher who was born in Athens in 470 Bc.He is very well known and was loved by many in his times. He actually was a very poor man and was described as ugly. But he was popular thanks to his knowledge. He even had his own students of which some became important philosophers too one of thrm being Plato. He had his own method in which he believed that you should not argue and make points but you should ask questions. Many people loved his theory and became followers of him.But the government thought that he was corrupting people's minds and put him on trial.he was sentenced to death and he accepted his fate without hesitation. He is still an important part off greek history and his methods are still used today.
Alexander The Great
Alexander The Great Was born in Macedon(modern day Macedonia) In 356 Bc.He become the king of Macedon when his father was killed. He then turned it into a powerful kingdom with a strong army.He then proceeded to invade the rest of greece. He then invaded the Persian empire and managed to overthrow the king and annex all its territory.Next he turned to India but his troops were sick of fighting and demanded to go home.Alex then died not long after. His generals then divided up the territory's into 4 parts. So Alexander Managed to build up one of the greatest empires in history and spread greek culture and life across the world.
Pheidippides
Pheidippides was born in Athens in 530 Bc.He a courier of the Athenian army and was sent to the battle of marathon. He accomplished something seemingly impossible to most people. He ran 150 miles to Sparta in just two days. After the Victory over the Persians,he then ran 25 more to Athens to announce the victory. He then died right after he said the words. He has become very important in athletics and is the influence on the marathon event in the Olympics and other events. In fact,he even got his own running event known as the Spartathlon where the best runners out there run the distance Pheidippides ran across the greek countryside. Its really amazing what people can do if they really try.
