The News You Can Use
September 11, 2020
Principal's Message
We are getting into the swing of things at Ravinia! The kids are doing an amazing job of adapting to our new routines and expectations, but the same warm, enthusiastic vibe can be felt in the hallways and classrooms.
As a staff, we are consistently reflecting on how we are providing instruction and assignments. We want you to know the following:
1. We care deeply about the children and their families. We are working around the clock to make this as seamless and as easy as possible.
2. We are navigating technology that is sometimes unpredictable and out of our control. There have been nationwide outages with some of our platforms. We understand this is NOT your child's fault, and hope you understand it is also not the fault of the teacher. If something isn't working, just send a note to the teacher, and we will work on it. We don't want any stress in thinking there are deadlines when something is out of your control.
3. As we get your feedback and provide it to our platform managers, we may make some changes to streamline access to lessons. Please know if we make changes, it is in the hopes to make things easier for everyone!
4. We are HAPPY to help! Whether over the phone, through email, or even in person sitting outside or in the vestibule, we are happy to help you and/or your child navigate Otus or anything else!
Warmly,
Courtney Nordstrom, Principal

MAP Testing
North Shore School District 112 utilizes the NWEA MAP Growth Assessments to inform students’ immediate instructional needs and to collect a data point to measure growth over time. The MAP Growth assessment is an adaptive, norm-referenced assessment utilized to measure student growth over time, understand student readiness levels, and target instruction for students needing additional support or challenge. Your child's teacher will be communicating additional information regarding testing schedules and preparation in the coming days. Please check out the NWEA Family Toolkit for more information.
Open House Videos
We're eager to virtually open our school doors to families for Open House. We will be moving back our Open House date to September, 17th to ensure that all schools across the district have it on the same day. This will allow both our hybrid and virtual classrooms to access content on the same day, as we know some families may have students being taught by teachers in multiple school sites.
Our teachers this year will be recording videos and we will be placing them online on Thursday for you to view.
Self-Certification: NEW WAYS TO CERTIFY
The system will only email the primary contact for certification. If you need to change that contact, please submit a technology support ticket.
As of this morning, CrisisGo Safety iPass now offers a web portal that parents/guardians can log into to certify every day regardless of if they are receiving the email notifications. The Self Certification link will also be on the Clever Family Portal. You should have received an invitation to join at the email addresses you have on file. More information can be found here.
Administrators and staff will have access to a list of students who have not self certified. Students who do not complete the self certification process will not be admitted into the building. Thank you for your cooperation on this important safety matter.
Welcome to our 'New' Nurse, Mrs. Weiss!
4th and 5th Graders - Meet the Orchestra!
Dear Families,
Looking for a creative outlet for your child? Does your child love music and want to join the orchestra? Orchestra is open to all 4th and 5th grade students and will be taught virtually this year.
Orchestra will begin the week of September 28th. Please use this link to explore Mrs. Steckel's orchestra page to register, learn about the instruments and discover how to rent. If your child was in orchestra last year and you registered on the website, she will be in touch with you soon.
FUNd Run 2020 - Virtual Event!
The health and safety of the D112 students, faculty and community members are our top concern. To this end, the 2020 FUNd Run will be a VIRTUAL event.
This year FUNd Run participants may not be running (and walking) on the beautiful course through the Ravinia Festival neighborhood, but participants will still feel part of the D112 community. And even better, participants will help raise much needed funds to support students in our community as part of a need-based scholarship fund providing critical support for items such as school supplies, books and musical instrument rentals.
Participants will complete a 5K or 1-mile Family Walk between October 3 to October 12th on whatever course they. Be sure to post pictures of your family and tag us on social media (@112foundation) or email pictures to us. “I ran FUNd Run 2020” signs are posted at all D112 schools for the perfect post-race photo op!

Online registration will begin September 1 and close October 12. Register at: 112foundation.org. All participants will be entered into a raffle with the opportunity to win prizes from local businesses. Check our sponsor page for businesses who donated.
At its heart, the FUNd Run is both a community event, and a fundraiser. In a year when the anticipated need is higher than ever, the FUNd Run will not have a 2020 race giveaway. We recognize many participants look forward to the race swag and wear it proudly throughout the year.
People registered for the event by WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 may visit the FUNd Run Swag Give-A- Way and pick up some vintage FUNd Run giveaways from past years. The Swag Give-A-Way will be held on October 1 from 2pm to 6pm (rain date: October 2, 2pm to 6pm). Location TBD.
