November, 2019 Newsletter
Sacred Heart of Jesus
Welcome to November!
A REMINDER about our Sacred Heart Newsletters
In keeping with our Eco initiatives and the direction from CDSBEO, schools in our Board have been asked to move away from paper copies of our newsletters to electronic versions. This month our November newsletter is being sent to our families through School Messenger. As always, all newsletters are available on our Sacred Heart website at https://sacredheartlanark.cdsbeo.on.ca.
Please feel welcome to call our school administrator, Irene Larocque, to confirm your current email address. Should you continue to require paper copies of our newsletters, please also let Irene know. We thank you for supporting our Eco initiatives!
ATHLETICS
Our Cross Country team participated in the local meet which was held at Conlon Farm in Perth on Thursday, October 24th. Congratulations to all of our runners; we are incredibly proud of your determination and strong Sacred Heart pride!

Triple P Parenting
The Health Unit's Triple P Parenting has also passed along this information about children and screen time:
Does screen time turn into scream time in your household? Looking for tips to help your child learn good screen time habits?
1. Limit screen use. Start by:
· having times in the day that are “screen free” such as before bedtime or during supper.
· keeping screen use to certain rooms of the house, such as the living room or family room;
2. Encourage other activities, like getting outside or meeting up with friends;
3. Be a good role model. What does your screen use tell your children?
Register for our Triple P Café on “Screentime Use” at https://healthunit.org/clinics-classes/triple-p-parenting/

Waste Free Wednesdays
Sacred Heart School is starting our year long Waste Free Wednesday campaign. The Sacred Heart ECO team is encouraging students and staff to reduce their lunch garbage items by replacing them with reusable water bottles and food containers. All students with litterless lunches on Wednesdays will have their names entered into a draw for a reusable container. The winner of the weekly Wednesday litterless lunch draw will have his/her picture placed on our ECO Wall of Fame. Thank you for your continued support in all our Sacred Heart ECO initiatives. Together we can make a difference. ❤️♻️

CDSBEO opportunities
The CDSBEO, in partnership with MLI Homestay, is currently seeking families to host international students ranging from Grades 7-12. There are opportunities to host students for short-term stays, for one semester, or for the whole school year. MLI Homestay will pay a supplemental fee to compensate for costs associated with hosting a student. Whether you have children at the elementary or high school level it could be a very fulfilling experience for all ages. Hosting an international student is a unique way to share our culture and local communities, while learning about international cultures and customs from these students. If you are interested in this rewarding opportunity, please contact Cindy LaRocque, with the International Education Program at 613-284-2613.

Halloween: Wear Black and Orange/School Social Mixer/Toonies for Tuition
On Halloween, Thursday, October 31, students are encouraged to wear black and orange (no costumes, masks, or scary accessories, please!). We will be having a whole school social mixer in the afternoon after our pm recess in our gym; students who prefer quieter activities will have the opportunity to play games or read in our Learning Commons or Library.
We are encouraging families to please donate $2.00 per family toward our Board’s Toonies for Tuition fundraiser. The Canadian Catholic School Trustees' Association (CCSTA) Charitable Foundation (Toonies for Tuition) provides tuition assistance to Catholic students in provinces that have limited or no public funding for Catholic schools. Thank you for supporting this worthwhile initiative!
Although we sincerely appreciate all of the kind and thoughtful gestures from our school families, in keeping with our Anaphylaxis Policy and our commitment to student safety, please speak with your child's teacher first before sending in any treats. An alternative donation (veggies, fruit, cheese, a seasonal book for your child’s class), is always welcome – Thank you!

Looking Back Assembly for OCTOBER
Snow Suit Drive
Sacred Heart is pleased to assist Family and Children’s Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville (FCSLLG) with their snowsuit drive. The goal of the campaign is to ensure that all local children and youth have a warm winter coat or snowsuit.
Please donate your gently used clean winter jackets and snowsuits in the drop off box located in Sacred Heart School by Friday, November 9, 2019. Winter boots are also accepted. Financial donations are also greatly appreciated. Our collective efforts can make a significant difference.
NOVEMBER Liturgy and REMEMBRANCE Day
Our School Community has been involved in reading newspapers provided for students from Veterans Affairs Canada. The resources provide valuable, age-appropriate information to support students' learning about the various conflicts within which our Canadian veterans and active members of service have been involved. On Remembrance Day, our students will write caring and anonymous Postcards for Peace to veterans and active members through Veterans Affairs Canada.
Progress Reports and Interviews
We will be holding Parent/Guardian interviews with Teachers at Sacred Heart on Thursday, November 28th. Interviews are scheduled in ten-minute time slots and will begin at 4:30 pm and run until 7:30 pm. Our office administrator, Irene Larocque, will be sending home a letter to each family with your interview time slots. If you cannot make your interview time, please call Mrs. Larocque. Similarly, if you prefer a telephone interview, please let Mrs. Larocque know and she will arrange a time that works for you and your child's teacher.
