High Blood Pressure

How It Affects Your Body

High Blood Pressure can affect your brain, heart and arteries, eyes and limbs.

Brain:

Ischemic strokes can be caused by arteries that get clotted when blood is being brought to the brain. This caused brain tissue to die which then causes the strokes. Also since blood stops flowing it to your brain it can cause certain areas in the brain to stop functioning or cause it to stop working overall.

Heart and Arteries:

High Blood Pressure can severely damage your heart and arteries and blood vessels. It can cause you to have heart disease and enlargement of the heart. Your arteries that lead to your heart can get clotted and fail to bring blood to your heart which can then cause heart attacks.

Eyes and Limbs:

Lack of blood flow to the eyes and limbs can cause them to stop working. So when the blood vessels get clotted you can become blind or have major eye issues. Also when the vessels leading to your limbs get clotted they can cause you to become paralyzed in that area and can cause you limbs to overall stop working.

Background of High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease that globally affects 927 million adults every year. It can be caused by an unhealthy diet of high slat and fatty foods intake, high levels of stress, being physically inactive or using tobacco. Also high blood pressure is known as the "silent killer" since there are no warning signs or symptoms.

Blood Pressure Ranges:

119/79 or lower is normal blood pressure

140/90 or higher is high blood pressure

Between 210 and 139 for the top number or between 80 and 89 for the bottom number is called Prehypertension. Prehypertension is the start of Hypertension or high blood pressure.

When It Was Identified

William Harvey found about High Blood Pressure in 1733. He described the systemic circulation in detail and how blood can be stopped by clotting and cause heart attacks and eye, limb and brain failure. Williams book wrote the book Anatomica De Motv Cordis Et San which explains how the heart works and how thick blood can clot arteries and blood vessels and cause high blood pressure.

How It Affects Our Society and How It Affected It In The Past

Many people are becoming victims of high blood pressure every year. With all the fast food restaurants and unhealthy eating habits more of our society is falling into high blood pressure. Currently 927 million adults are victims of high blood pressure but by 2025 1.56 million adults will have high blood pressure but only 47% have it under control. High blood pressure affected our society in the past similar to how it affects our society today. People weren't eating healthy or they were physically inactive or they had high stress levels.
