Let the Fun Begin!
Most of you are aware that I will not be here at the start of the year. Please know that I will miss seeing all of you and I look forward to my return later in the fall. I know that I will be busy in the upcoming weeks but also know that there won't be a day that goes by that I won't think about Rose Glen and wonder how all of you are doing. We have two fabulous leaders who will support Rose Glen while I am out of the building this fall. Both are very knowledge of Waukesha and have been administrators in the School District of Waukesha. To kick the year off Cynthia Gannon will be here oversee the wonderful Rose Glen. Cynthia has served as a principal at multiple elementary buildings in Waukesha and I know that you will enjoy getting to know her upcoming weeks. In October Sara Behrendt will take over for Cynthia before my return. Sara is very familiar with Rose Glen as she has already served as the principal of Rose Glen. Rose Glen is in excellent hands and a beat will not be missed. This is such a wonderful school community and I know that both won't want to leave after having the opportunity to spend time at our school. Thank you for all that you do to support Rose Glen and make it the school that it is! We are lucky to have each one of you and our school is truly a gift!

Jean is also more than willing to assist with any health concerns that you might have. This is my ninth year as the Principal of Rose Glen Elementary. It is an honor to serve as the principal of this building and it is a privilege to land in such a wonderful community. Rose Glen is truly a special place and I just love being here. Please note: We have been notified by Lifetouch that if you are unable to attend Picture Day on 8/21, you should not place your order for pictures at this time. Their system will be confused because it won't be able to match your order with a photo taken and will therefore refund your money. Lifetouch will send out a reminder 2 weeks prior Re-take Day and you can purchase a package at that time with a new ID exclusively for Re-take Day.

The easiest way to order school pictures is online at mylifetouch.com. Make sure to order before Picture Day Wednesday, August 21 to save time. Forms will be available on Picture Day also, but the process will go so much quicker if you order online prior to the day! You are also able to order a yearbook online. Rose Glen does not order any extra yearbooks, so be sure to order one so you don't miss out!

Safe Arrival Attendance System
Pre-Excused Absences: If you know your child is going to be absent and you want to report that before the student is marked absent in school, Safe Arrival provides three convenient methods:
1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
3. Call the toll-free number 1-866-490-7371 to report an absence using the automated phone system. These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.
Future absences can be reported at any time.
Post-Excused Absences: If you were not able to report your child’s absence in advance you will be notified by the SchoolMessenger system if your child is marked absent.
You are notified of a reported absence within minutes of the reported absence.
The School Messenger app or the website will allow families to customize where they want to receive their notifications and allow them to excuse the absence right from the notification.
If you report your child’s absence in advance using the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or mobile app, you will NOT receive these notifications.

Too Sick for School
Deciding when to keep a sick child home from school can be a difficult decision. To help identify illnesses in our schools, parents/guardians are encouraged to report their child’s specific symptoms when calling in sick to the health room at their child’s school. Voice messages can be left for our health room assistants 24 hours a day on a confidential voicemail.
A child with a temperature of 100.0 degrees F or higher should not be at school.
A child should be fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication (Tylenol/acetaminophen, Aleve/ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child has other symptoms such as a rash, skin lesions, sore throat or coughing are present, notify your healthcare provider to discuss the need for medical follow up.
Common Respiratory Illnesses
(these can include Influenza, Pertussis, Common Cold, Croup)
Children with cold symptoms such as minor throat irritation & stuffy/runny nose without a fever should not have to miss school.
If a child has severe cold symptoms (hacking/harsh cough, a very runny nose and/or thick, colored nasal drainage) may need medical attention. Contact your health care provider to determine if your child needs to be seen for evaluation.
A child with a very painful sore throat, white spots on the back of the throat, high fever, rash, stomach ache and/or headache should stay home from school and be seen by a health care provider to rule out a possible infection.
If diagnosed with strep throat the child must be on antibiotics for a minimum of 24 hours and be fever free without fever reducing medications before returning to school.
Hand, Foot and Mouth/Fifth Disease
A child with hand, foot, and mouth disease is most contagious during the first week of illness. Talk with your healthcare provider about when your child may return to school.
Ear Infection/Ear Pain
Children should stay home until fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours. Please notify healthcare provider to discuss the need for medical follow up.
Vomiting, Diarrhea, Stomach Ache
(illnesses may include gastroenteritis, salmonella, rotavirus)
If your child has had more than one episode of diarrhea or vomiting, please keep your child out of school until symptoms have resolved for at least 24 hours. An exception may be made if diarrhea or vomiting are associated with an ongoing medical issue diagnosed by a physician.
Contact your health care provider if your child has a stomach ache that is severe enough to limit or restrict activity.
If your child has an unusual rash (may or may not be associated with a fever), keep your child at home until you have discussed the rash with your health care provider to determine if medical care is needed.
Symptoms can include crusty, sticky, itchy, red eyes which may or may not have thick drainage.
Please contact your child’s doctor if your child has any of the following symptoms: eye drainage that comes back every 30 minutes (or more often) after wiping the eye clear, if there is swelling and redness of the area around the eye (below or above), or an eye that is stuck together in the morning. If these symptoms are present, follow up with health care provider is needed prior to returning to school.
These skin conditions can be contagious rashes in children and require treatment by a medical professional prior to returning to school.
These can look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage present.
Students should stay home for 24 hours and/or until area is not draining or can be covered safely.
Other skin conditions such as eczema, heat rashes, bug bites and allergic reactions are not infectious, and a child may come to school with them.
Other Contagious/Nuisance Diseases
If your child has been diagnosed with a nuisance infestation/disease such as head lice or scabies, he/she may return to school after treatment has been completed. Please contact your health care provider for instruction if you suspect your child needs treatment.

Regular handwashing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.
Medications: If your child needs to take medications in school, including prescription OR over the counter remedies such as Tylenol or cough drops, the School District requires the following information:

Did you know that Rose Glen has an online family directory? Have you signed up yet? You decide what you want included in the directory.
Having access to this directory is a great way for you to stay connected with other school families. It also is the way that you would get contact information for your child’s classmates, including information you would need for sending out birthday invitations via email or U.S. mail. (Please remember that unless your child is inviting the entire class, party invitations may not be distributed at school.)
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. Hopefully you have already signed up for the family directory. If you have not, please take a few minutes to do so.

We hope everyone is having a fantastic summer! It's that time of year again, school supplies lists are available and we are trying to fit in as much as we can before the school year starts again. This coming school year will see some changes as construction has been going on during the summer and some new staff have joined Rose Glen.
Our kids are awesome and we learn just as much from them throughout the school year. Some of our kids best memories from the year come from all the events that take place outside of school hours. These events are always tons of FUN and we always have a FABULOUS turnout for our after hours school events. Below are the key events that took place this year:

This list is not exhaustive as we also have lots of other activities that volunteers support within the school day and throughout the school year. These include events such as Dining Nights, Spirit Wear, Box Tops, Conference Meals, Math/Book in a Bag, Library Shelving, Lego League, etc.
Our goal is to be able to continue these wonderful family opportunities that have been strong traditions throughout the years. These events have provided families opportunities to connect and enjoy time together outside of the school day! Did you know that most of these events were almost canceled this year? Most events were pulled off with the same one or two people taking the lead in the knick of time to save the events so that the fun could continue.
Throughout the years it has become more and more challenging to find individuals or teams of individuals who are willing to lead the events. We completely understand that lives are busy and calendars are packed. We also know that it might be a little scary to think about leading an event and being unsure if you are going to do it ‘right’ or if it will be fun or not.
The PTO Board has taken time to really think about how to best support volunteers and those who are possibly willing to lead events. In order to better support our teams leading the events, outlines have been created to take the guessing work out. Also, a PTO member will be designated to help support or assist as needed. The hope is that this takes off some of the pressure that some might feel from leading an event. The PTO can get help you get started and answer any questions that you might have.
There is also some flexibility for when some of the events can occur. Most of the dates for events are not set in stone. There are events that need help during the school day and others that are weeknights or weekends. Please don’t rule out something you’d like to look into because the flexibility offers a lot of options. We’d love for you to consider helping out and remember you are by no means on your own!!
Soon PTO will be sending out a sign-up for the upcoming events that will need volunteers. We encourage to sign up and consider teaming up with other to lead an event. How fun to run an event with friends and make it your own! Remember the PTO is here to support you and your team in any way that they can! Our goal is to have all events filled by the beginning of October. This will allow teams to have ample planning time and be ready to go for the school year. If we cannot get teams to take the lead by October then we will take it as a sign that it is time to move on from the event or the event was not meant to be this year. These events are always well attended and it would be unfortunate if the events did not take place. FIRST Lego League Jr: Building Curiosity
FIRST Lego League Jr (students 1st-4th grade) challenges teams of children to explore a scientific concept, then build a model and code it to make it move using LEGO®Education WeDo 2.0. Teams present their poster and model at an expo in the area. For more information visit the FIRST Lego League Jr website.
This program is run by two or more adult coaches per team. In order to run these programs, we are looking for adult volunteers. Without volunteers, these programs will not be able to run! Teams will meet once a week at days/times set by parent volunteer coaches.
FIRST Lego League
In FIRST Lego League (FLL), students age 9 to 14 research a real-world problem and are challenged to develop a solution. They must also design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS, then compete on a table-top playing field. For more information, visit the FIRST Lego League website.
*Our FLL teams (4th/5th graders) are currently at capacity from returning students, however if you are interested in having your child participate, we would love to help anyone interested in coaching get another team get started! Teams should meet twice a week to be prepared by the competition date.
Interested?Lego League season starts in early September, and ends with an expo event or competition usually in November or December. If you are interested in participating in or volunteering for either of the Lego League programs, please fill out the online interest form by Friday, August 23 in order to get teams assigned before school starts.
