St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 5 | 5 MARCH 2020
''love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father ... ” Matthew 5: 38-48
Message from the Principal
The children are now settled into their classroom routines and they are learning, forming friendships and getting involved in the many activities and specialist programs on offer at St Columba's.
We will be conducting Kindy 2022 interviews early next term; please let family and friends know if you think they may be interested in joining our community.
Well done to the Year 4 to 6 students who participated in Friday's swimming trials - swimming is an important life skill and, regardless of where children place in races, we are proud of their efforts.
Next week is Wellness Week. As articulated in our school's Strategic Plan, we believe that developing wellbeing practices for the mind, body and spirit nurtures the growth of the whole child. By providing an environment in which wellbeing practices are fostered, students will develop a meaningful connection to God, a strong sense of self and a connection to the wider community.
God Bless
Allen

Wellness Week
Each term we shine a spotlight on Wellbeing throughout Wellness Week. At the start of the week, students make a Wellbeing Pledge and commit to an activity to nourish their body, mind and soul. Shalini McCullough (mother of Talin, Yr 2, and Kedar, Pre-K) will lead each class through a Wellbeing practice such as mindful breathing, meditation, mindful eating or walking. And on Thursday everyone is encouraged to bring a ‘waste free’ lunch and recess to contribute to the wellbeing of our planet.
No homework is set during Wellness Week, and families are encouraged to instead choose a wellness activity together in preference to individual screen or TV time. Ideas might include (but not are limited to): an activity from your child’s Wellness Pledge, reading, going on a walk or playing a game, planning, preparing and eating a healthy meal, naming all the things you are grateful for each day, going to a church service where you can receive Communion or a blessing and be reminded in community that you are loved by God.
Our commitment to Wellness at school extends beyond one week a term. In line with our Strategic Plan, we also want to create regular opportunities to foster wellbeing practices at school, and will be offering a Wellness Lunchtime activity once a week throughout the year. Activities might include mandala colouring, sketching, contemplative prayer, breathing exercises, yoga, pilates and musical recitals. To celebrate and share the rich and diverse talents and interests of our school community, we invite anyone who can gift their time to run a 25 minute lunchtime Wellness Session to please get in touch with the Wellness Committee:(belinda.hill@optusnet.com.au or shalinipandalai@hotmail.com)
Any suggestions and feedback about Wellness Week and the proposed Wellness Lunchtime sessions would be gratefully welcomed by the Wellness Committee.
