Learn Like A Pirate by Paul Solarz
In honor of moderating Paul's Learn Like a Pirate twitter chat, I thought I would throw out some great nuggets from his book.
There is a great section in Paul's book on Improvement Focus vs. Grade Focus. While we know that the "grade" is what our parents relate to and what our scholars are "working towards" as educators we know that we are looking for GROWTH. Remember the education hearings? Growth or Proficiency? :) One of the most ELITE ways to increase the improvement in your content is by giving the scholars feedback! And not feedback as in "good job", but specific and intentional feedback that will help them continue to grow. Hattie and Paul definitely aren't wrong about this!

Focus On:
OPENINGS
We will begin our school year with a heavy focus on OPENINGS. Research tells us...and WE KNOW....that those first 12 minutes of instruction in our classes is the most critical and what the middle level brain gets the most out of! How can you #LEVELUP your openings for the remainder of this year and for next year to make sure they are highly engaging, connected to your LEQ, your standard, and your Learning Goals/Targets. I can promise you, based on year of practice, setting your stage with an elite opening for your instruction will increase your scholar achievement!
Here is our lesson design template: (make a copy first) Get a jump on your planning for next school year! Our instructional framework is not changing!

#TheLastThreeDays
Here we go!
The #LastThreeDays is a social, emotional learning project aimed to focus on and build social emotional skills in our scholars. During the #LastThreeDays, all whole group and small group instruction will be built around those types of skills and that type of learning. Below is a variety of resources you can use to begin to plan your days. Also, don't be afraid to try something great. Maybe split up your WHOLE team of scholars into color groups and rotate the color groups through a schedule on Monday and Tuesday where every teacher on your team sees every scholar? The ideas are endless. The goal? To make these last three days meaningful, intentional, engaging, fun, exciting, memorable ALL THE WHILE working on the WHOLE CHILD! Throughout the week we will be sending you a variety of ideas to use.
