GMS Principal's Corner

October 17, 2021

Dear Galvin Families,

We hope you had a great weekend and continued to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. The Galvin building has been a busy place since Friday morning. Service Master and Continental Clean Air have been here almost around the clock and are making significant progress. We are very hopeful that we will be granted permission to occupy the building before the end of this week and will keep you updated as we know more.

In the meantime, we are very grateful that the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has granted us an emergency waiver to hold school remotely this week. This waiver allows up to keep instruction and learning as consistent and engaging as it would be if students were in the building. I hope that you have been receiving the emails from Interim Superintendent Folan and the GMS Administration that detail what happened in the building and what's being done to remediate the water damage as well as the plan for the week. If you haven't, you can find links to both communications here: Interim Superintendent's Letter and the GMS Administration Letter.

As a reminder, school for GMS students will be fully remote this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We hope to be back in the building by Thursday morning. Below are some important details to be aware of:

  • On Monday, we will remotely follow a Day 2, Two-Hour Delay Schedule, which can be found here.

  • Tuesday - Wednesday we will remotely follow our regular schedule which is linked here.

  • We will share additional information about logging into Google Meets for each class in a separate email.

  • If your child needs a Chromebook or a Hot Spot, our technology team will be at the Galvin to meet your needs Monday from 7:30 - 9:30.

  • Technology support will be available by emailing or by calling the main office. We are here to help you and your child!

  • Breakfast and Lunch will be provided and available for pick up for any family who wishes to take advantage of this option. Pick up will happen at Canton High School between 10:30-11:30. Meal pickup will be outside the cafeteria between Canton High School and the Rodman Building. Pick up will be a drive through; families will not need to enter the building.

  • Students will be expected to actively participate in online, live instruction for the full school day. This includes keeping their cameras on from the time each class starts until each class ends. This is a change from last year and will be a requirement for all students.

  • Attendance on these days is important and expected. Attendance will be taken each period. If a student is absent, the GMS administrators or guidance counselors will contact home to check in.

  • All students who receive IEP-related or multi language learner services will continue to receive their services during this time of remote learning.

If you have any questions, GMS staff will be on-hand and available beginning at 7:30am tomorrow (Monday) morning. Please reach out with any questions or needs you may have.

Thank you,

Mike Green

Clubs Cancelled This Week!

Due to the building closure this week, all clubs will be cancelled and postponed until a later date. We will make up the missed day. Thank you.

I would like to share a huge thank you on behalf of CAPT and the Galvin school community. Not only did we meet our fund raising goal, but exceeded it raising $44,000. Thank you for making the day (and school year) a success!!!

The weather was amazing. The smiles on the student’s faces said it all. It was a GREAT day! Everyone was happy, positive and enjoyed themselves.

A special thank you to all the teachers and administration who worked effortlessly supervising the day and events.

A special thank you to Vice Principal Jim Spillane, who has been helping to plan and organize the day since August.

A special thank you to the administrative office, especially Courtney G; for collecting hundreds of pledges.

A special thank you to the CAPT Treasurer, Monique B., who oversaw over 550 envelopes, pledge sheets, donations, and spent many hours at the bank making deposits.

A special thank you to CAPT volunteer Jessica Y, who jumped in everywhere; helping assemble packages, attending and taking pictures of all 3 grades, assembling homework passes, literally whatever was asked she jumped in!!!

As your new CAPT President, I am beyond pleased at how well everything has turned out. Now the focus will be on how to best service the GMS.

Please join us at the next CAPT meeting on 11/1 at 6:30pm in the GMS library. New and old parents and guardians are welcomed, always!

Water Bottle Reminder

Students are reminded to bring their own refillable water bottle. We have several filling stations, but the traditional water fountains are still not accessible at this time and we do not have containers to hand out for the stations.

Early Dismissal Procedures

As a reminder, if your child needs to be dismissed, please send them to school in the morning with a note. Your student should bring this note to Ms. Piana in guidance before heading to their first period class.

Following this procedure will allow us to have your child downstairs, ready for pickup and will get you on your way as quickly as possible. We understand unexpected emergencies arise during the day, but these should be the exception. In those instances, please come to the office door and ring the bell. We will have a form for you to fill out and will call your child down as efficiently as possible. However, please understand this will take some time. Thank you.

Picture Day Orders

If you forgot to send in your order form for picture day, you may still do so until Wednesday, October 20, 2021 and we will send it to the picture studio for you. After that date, you may still order but will need to do so directly through Chestnut Hill Studios. A copy of the order form is attached below and the link to their website is here.

GMS Cross Country Update and Our Bulldog Scholars

Congratulations to the GMS Cross Country team for winning both the girls and boys meets and placing top 5 for both races against Milford during their first home meet! Lauren Raffetto and Kai Anand took first place for each of the races. Nora Giannacopoulos took 2nd, Elena Silva placed 3rd, Cassidy Lyons 4th, and Grace Martinek placed 5th for the girls team. Andrew Kurchak placed 2nd, Riley Swearingen took 3rd, Declan Monahan 4th, and Colby Cormier placed 5th. All the members displayed great sportsmanship and were improved in time and effort! Great job to the team! Thanks to everyone who came out to help and support the team!

The GMS Cross Country Bulldog Scholars are weekly performers who demonstrate hard work at practice and meets, exemplify sportsmanship, and respect the learning environment. Recipients are considered and chosen by the coaches each week. Students will be acknowledged each week throughout the season. Congratulations to this week's GMS Cross Country Bulldog Scholars: Declan Monahan & Honesty Johnson.

We previously shared with families an electronic copy of the GMS Student and Family Handbook with the District Appendix. This Handbook is also posted on our school website. The link to this handbook can be found here: Approved GMS Handbook with Appendix.

It is the responsibility of each family to review the Handbook together and to fill out the 2021-22 Canton Public Schools Student/Family Handbook and Permissions Signature Page. The link to the Google Form can be found here. Please ☑ each section and electronically sign this form as receipt and agreement as stated below. We ask that you complete this form for each child you have at the Galvin.

We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Canton Farmer's Market

The final farmers market of the season is coming up on 10/24/21. The mission of the Canton Farmers Market is to bring together local farmers and artisans who produce the highest quality goods and connect them to the Canton community, while providing education on health and wellness through fresh food, fitness and social connection.

The event is going to be a celebration of the fall harvest and our successful inaugural season, with the community. There will be pumpkin decorating, cider and donuts, Bon Me food truck, a band, games, henna, temporary tattoos, farmers market bingo, touch a truck, our usual lineup of incredible vendors and more!
