Instructional Technology for the ELA Classroom

Realtime Board

Realtime Board can be used as a collaborative tool or an individual tool for organizing information. Students and teachers alike can create any number of graphic organizers, flow charts, calendars, drawings, etc. to enhance the learning process. This application can be used to visually present and organize various approaches to problem solving and/or viewpoints on a topic. After using Realtime Board to gather and outline information, students should be better prepared to draft more developed essays, projects, and/or presentations.

Evernote

Evernote can be used as en e-portfolio of student work as well as a database or collection of the resources they use to create their papers or other projects. This tool also has the potential to show growth over the course of several years if implemented at a school building or district level. Evernote will allow teachers and students to share or publish work with each other. By consolidating the collection of work into one searchable site, students can look for similarities and differences across their own work, that of their peers, and that of the references they make use of. By making the works that students reference available in the same place as their own writing, a more comprehensive system of appropriate citation becomes possible.

NCTE Framework Alignment:

1. Design and share information for global communities that have a variety of purposes
  • Do students choose tools to share information that match their need and audience?
  • Do students share and publish their work in a variety of ways?

2. Manage, analyze, and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneously presented information
  • Do students synthesize information from a variety of sources?
  • Do students strive to see limitations and overlaps between multiple streams of information?

3. Attend to the ethical responsibilities required by complex environments
  • Do students share information in ways that consider all sources?
