February is "I love to read" month!

Our Hawthorne "I Love to Read" month committee has put together daily opportunities for our building to highlight the enjoyment of reading! We will have mystery readers, wear a shirt with words, drop everything and read, and book trivia (to name a few) days that we are very much looking forward to. Please encourage your son/daughter to participate as much as possible with all of the fun activities and hopefully continue the love of reading at home throughout the month and moving forward as well!

"Soup"er Bowl Fundraiser

Hawthorne wants to start the year off giving back to our community. Student Council will be hosting a food drive to donate non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army!

When: February 7th-11th

What: Your child can bring non-perishable foods to Hawthorne

How: Purchase or bring canned goods like fruits, vegetables, soup, noodles, etc. and bring them to Hawthorne Elementary to their classroom.

Arrival/Dismissal follow up

Thank you for reading my previous update and helping us keep everyone safe during our arrival and dismissal times. This will be an ongoing project for our building, as we know it can take time to make adjustments but we know this is in the best interest of our students, staff, and family's.

Please be sure to not pull your vehicle into the bus lane on Hawthorne Avenue in either the morning or afternoon and it is especially important that family members don't park at ThorneCrest and have students go from that parking lot across the busy street and through buses. Again, thank you for your attention to this and let me know if you have any questions or feedback.

February Tech Tip

This month's tech tip circles around DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that most home routers come with built-in parental controls to help ease your mind when children access home Wifi? Did you also know that school-issued devices coming home with students already have filtering software in place to protect your children? As with anything, NO filter is foolproof and the best strategy for being safe online is a balance between education and control. Most home routers now have apps that act as companions to your home network allowing you to control everything from time limits to content. You can even create MULTIPLE home networks that allow you to have certain devices on a different network. If your router does NOT have parental controls you can purchase add-on software or devices from vendors that include Kaspersky, Circle, and more. Even with the best internet filtering, it is ALWAYS wise to talk to your children about being safe online. Open conversations about digital interactions lead to healthy experiences online.
