Mock Interviews Tuesday and Wednesday
Tuesday, December 4, and Wednesday, December 5, we will be having many visitors to help volunteer for the Mock Interviews. In order to accommodate parking for our visitors, we have designated a space in the staff parking in the NorthWest Lot (please see the picture attached). I will be placing signs to detour anyone from parking in that space for those two days. Thank you for your understanding and help.

Happy Sunday Staff! There is some super cool information in the Staff Newsletter (http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18) this week:
- Our WHS Staff Canvas page has a new look. (The opening is an embedded Powerpoint, so you never have to edit in Canvas again!) Want to make it super spectacular? Let me know what needs to be on it, and I will add all the documents, apps, or links you need.
- Do you rely on reviews when you shop? Do you know that many of them are fake? Try using Fakespot This website is a great way to illustrate to students how even reviews can be falsified but also verified online. Check it out for a possible poignant object lesson for the season 😊
- Some students this week learned how to use AirDrop to wirelessly deliver content from their iPhone or other iOS devices to either their teacher or another device. Check out the newsletter for a handy-dandy virtual handout you could use with your class, and for links and descriptions of what it could do for you.
And more! If your students could use these skills, just send me an email and I can come to your class. http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18
From the College and Career Center
- We are very excited for Junior Mock Interviews this week (12/4 and 12/5)! This is a very exciting opportunity for our students. Students can find their interview times on the 11th Grade Canvas Page. Seniors needing to make up this requirement should see their counselor or Ms. Fix (College and Career Counselor).
- Scholarships: Kaiser Health Care Scholarship (one award is specific for a WHS student). Registration for the application closes Dec. 8th. Minimum GPA 2.5.

Building Relationships - Advice from a Colleague
These are part of the test rules I project during test days:
1. You are an individual, not a score. A test is one way to measure your knowledge of a topic. Your grades and GPA do not define who you are.
2. Do your best! I believe in you. :-)
-Greet students at the door
-Send out Classroom Messenger updates - as incentives in class, as well!
-Being a “warm demander”
-Last year at the end of the year, I gave each student a different science award and wrote a personal note on the back
-I've met a lot of students through homework club, key club, and tutoring center
-I encourage them to talk to each other; lots of elbow partner breaks to summarize a lesson
-I smile a lot
-Remember their names
-We talk about feelings
-Multiple opportunities on learning targets
-I'm very structured and clear about assignments, due dates, expectations, etc.
-I'm really silly and dramatic when explaining science concepts
-I check in with kids often
-I notice when they are in a bad or sad mood and ask them about it
-I tell them I have tissues and chocolate and protein bars at my desk when they need it
-I wear a rainbow ribbon and Black Lives Matter pin
-I negotiate with them to make accommodations for them on assignments when they are having a hard time
-I ask them to share about their weekend/make announcements
