Wacky Hair Day
Please remind your students about Wacky Hair Day on Friday February 1st. Our leadership team wants to have a fashion show, but I've been clear it has to be completely voluntary and would have to happen during the first part of lunch hour between 11:40 and 12:10 p.m. in the gym (We'll see if they can pull it together:) We'll announce details early next week!
Celebrating our Culture Practice
Clay Projects Final Phase
We have replenished our paints and about half of our classes are done, so everything is right on or ahead of schedule. If you need any specific colours, please let Phil know

REPORTING VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE PROTOCOL
The potential for violence exists whenever there is direct interaction between workers and non-workers. Violence in the Workplace is covered under WorkSafeBC’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Section 4.27. Direct interaction between workers is not considered workplace violence, but rather improper workplace conduct, which is covered under Section 4.25 under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
DEFINITION:
“Violence” – means the attempted or actual exercise by a person, other than a worker, of any physical force so as to cause injury to a worker, and includes anythreatening statement or behaviour which gives a worker reasonable cause to believe that he or she is at risk of injury.
A threat to a worker or the worker’s family is a violent incident if the worker reasonably believes the threat is meant and the worker or family is at risk of injury.
A threat that relates to conduct other than physical force (e.g., “I’ll see you in the court”) or verbal abuse not involving a threat of physical force, does not amount to an incident of violence.
Verbal abuse or harassing behaviour is not included in the definition of violence, unless it includes threats or behaviour which give the worker reasonable cause to believe that the worker is at risk of injury (WorkSafeBC Policy 4.27).
“Incident” – means an occurrence that resulted in or had the potential for causing an injury or mental disorder.
REPORTING VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE:
An employee injury/incident report must be completed and submitted online anytime an employee needs to seek medical attention beyond the first aid attendant or if there is any time loss beyond the date of injury.
Anytime the employee feels the need, they can complete an injury/incident report online. An employee injury/incident is based on the individual’s perception and no one can deny an employee from completing it.

REPORTING VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE: (continued)
When describing how the incident happened, where applicable and necessary, please use INITIALS when referencing students or staff in the text of the report. It is OK to include the full name of the supervisor, first aid attendant or Health & Safety committee member in sections that ask for specific names.
We recommend that employees report online when there is an escalation of behaviour(s) as this will prompt Student Support or other district staff (e.g., Safe Schools) to conduct a review and ensure that appropriate safety precautions or interventions are being implemented.
Only complete one injury/incident report online per day, per employee detailing multiple incidents and/or students, as appropriate.
If the intensity of the behaviour is mild but undesired, ensure the information is documented (e.g., in an ABC chart - Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequences or daily log book). This information MUST be regularly shared and discussed with the team working with the student, not just Student Support or other district staff as appropriate (e.g., Safe Schools) in order to be effective at improving negative behaviours.
An Employee Safety Plan (ESP) outlines the measures that staff are required to take to ensure that they are safe when working with students who have a violent tendency. An Employee Safety Plan is different from a Positive Behaviour Support Plan, which is focused on developing a student’s interpersonal skills and behaviour.
Employee Safety Plans are not created in order to be punitive toward the student or to the staff reporting the violence or undesired behaviours that may lead to injury of a staff member. The behaviours do not have to be intentionally violent in order to be reportable. If the student causes harm, the incident should be reported in one of the methods described above.
Once the Employee Safety Plan is developed, the employees working with the student MUST follow the plan to help ensure their safety and the student’s safety.
If there are concerns regarding the effectiveness of the Employee Safety Plan suggesting a need to modify the ESP, employees should inform the school team and the ESP should be modified, as appropriate, by those authorized to do so. It is critical that there be an open tone to these meetings to ensure information sharing and the development of a plan that will work best for the employees using it.

REPORTING VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE: (continued)
In the event that there is a significant incident (team to decide what significant is, as it does not need to result in injury, but could include the possibility of significant incident), the student may be asked to work at home until the Employee Safety Plan can be revised and any training or required updating is completed. There should not be a delay in the creation or revision of an ESP. If the educational team requires assistance in developing an ESP, the Principals should contact Student Support. Also, not all of the students requiring an ESP are associated with Student Support.
All employees have a right to ‘no discrimination’ for reasonably reporting health or safety concerns. As such, no worker may be disciplined, demoted, docked pay or terminated for reasonably reporting concerns.
