Volume 3, Issue 30 - May 18, 2020

Dear Gentry Families,

We want to thank you in advance for your patience as we try and wrap up this school year. We are sending more details about the flow of traffic for our May 20th and May 21st item drop off and pick up days (10:00am - 12:00 noon or 1:00 - 3:00 pm - check times for instruments.) We are including the information we sent last week again as a reminder, see below.

Remember social distancing is necessary if students have an appointment to retrieve their locker belongings from inside the building and it is not a time to socialize, as there are specific times for each student. We also want to remind you and your student to please remain in your vehicles while you move through our parking lot as we retrieve and deliver items to you while you are in your vehicle. You may open your trunk and place a sign in your front windshield to further limit physical interaction if you desire (Legible First and Last Name). The only time a student should need to exit your vehicle will be if they have an appointment to retrieve locker items. They can do this safely once you are parked in the designated areas (blacktop by tennis courts and bus circle) and only during their allotted time.

Remember to sign up in this LINK to schedule a time if students need to go to their locker! Students not going to their lockers do not need to sign up.

Thanks for your help!

Gentry’s Got Virtual Talent Show 2020!

If you missed the Talent Show Live last Friday, please follow the link to watch our talented students!

Virtual 8th Grade Dance

We want to invite all our 8th grade students to a Virtual 8th Grade Dance on the evening of May 22nd from 7 to 9 pm. There will be music provided by a DJ, and many break rooms hosted by teachers with fun activities for everybody! You will receive all the details about the Virtual Dance and how to access it in Zoom via email. Please, remember this is a school sponsored activity, with the support of PTSA, and the school code of conduct applies. Only Gentry students will be allowed to attend the Virtual Dance.

Access to the Building

We understand that some of our students left items in their lockers when we left school and we want to give them an opportunity to retrieve them. We will give them access to their lockers on May 20th and 21st. Please, understand that this is their final opportunity to get items from lockers only. Students will not have access to classrooms and will only be in the building for less than 15 minutes. All social distancing guidelines will apply while students are in the building or waiting to get in.

All items that are not retrieved at this time will be donated.

Students will sign up in this LINK to schedule a time. Students in each grade will use different doors to access the building. Please, pay attention to which door students need to use based on their grade level:

  • 6th Grade: Enter through the second set of south doors outside of Mrs. Schnake’s room and go directly up the stairs by Mr. Klempke’s room.

  • 7th Grade: Enter through the first set of south doors outside of Mr. Nichols’s room.

  • 8th Grade: Enter through the FACS entrance outside Mrs. Scanlon’s room on the north side of the building.

In order to maximize our time in this process, we will ask the students to enter the building by themselves. We can only allow 10 people per zone at a time, so if students bring someone else with them, that will reduce the number of students we can allow in at a time, making the process longer. Please, remember that we are working within the strict guidelines provided by CPS and the Health Department to be as efficient as possible.

Please, be mindful that if you miss your appointment you will have to wait until there is an opening in the schedule to access the building.

We are asking that parents park in the black top area (by the tennis courts) while their students access the building. That way they do not block the traffic during the drop off process.

Returning Items

  • Instruments: Band and Orchestra students should have received all information about returning their instruments from their teachers. If they have not, please reach out to Mrs. Blumberg or Ms. Kossmann.

  • Library Books: Students will be able to drop off their library books on May 20th and 21st from 10:00am - 12:00 noon or 1:00 - 3:00 pm. If you do not need to enter the building, we will have a drive-thru drop off to collect your materials. If you are coming into the building, we will have carts in the hallways where you can return materials when you clean out your lockers, or for items you are bringing back. The Media Center will be sending out Overdue Notices via student email so you will know what items are due back to the media center. Please note that even though iPads will show that they are ‘overdue’, you are not to return iPads unless you are leaving the district.

  • Athletic Uniforms: Those students who participated on our track and field team will need to return the uniform that was issued to them. Please have your student place their uniform (jersey top and shorts) in a bag with their full name clearly printed on the bag. If your student purchased a track team/individual photo they will be disbursed to them along with their yearbook.

  • Devices: Students will keep their iPads over the summer and bring them back to school in the fall. Students NOT returning to CPS can turn in iPads at Aslin Admin Center - South parking lot at 1818 W. Worley June 1st-3rd 8-4pm. If you need to return your device and can’t make it on any of these dates, please bring it to Gentry on May 20th or 21st to return with other item pickup and dropoff. If you are returning a device, please bring your charger and fill out a technology return form provided at Gentry. Please note: 8th grade students will return their iPads at High Schools in the fall and receive a laptop.

You will receive more details on the week of May 21 and 22 explaining how the traffic will flow.

Yearbooks will be available for pick on May 20th and 21st from 10 to 12 and 1 to 3 pm via drive through at the Gentry parking lot.

Last Day of School

This is a friendly reminder that May 21st is the last day of school. That is the last day students can submit work to improve their grade if they currently are not passing the class. If your student is not passing one or more classes, please make sure you communicate with their teachers to know what work they still have to complete.
