Different but the same?
There is a lot of variety within a species (size, color, shape).
For example the variation of shell types within the Galapagos Tortoises.

Keep them going
The varieties in species are sometimes passed on to the offsprings (to continue the chain)

THE best shall live
External conditions may affect survival, so offsprings who are better suited to the environment around them, tend to be produced more often

Is random random?
Nothing is RANDOM! Things do not just happen because they do: it is because someone or something makes it happen. In this case, animals who are not properly suited for their environment die off and take their "weak" traits with them, hence leaving behind those with the favorable traits and those best suited for the environment.
