Moreno's Message
Superintendent Briefings
October 30, 2017
Dear La Vernia Community,
I hope everyone is enjoying the change in weather. The cooler days make for beautiful opportunities to be out with the family.
I am currently reading a book called Soup, written by John Gordon. The storyline is about a CEO by the name of Nancy who started working for Soup, Inc. The company was in much disarray and she could not figure how she was going to turn it around. Little did she know, the answer was within her reach. Nancy quickly discovers that the recipe for success, whether it be at work or at home, is measured by the value one places on the formation of positive working relationships.
The partnership we form as educators with parents and community members is critical to the success of our students. Our Board of Trustees and I invite you to have conversations with our teachers, staff, and administrators as we take the journey of continuous improvement together. The greatest gift that we can give our students and children is the comfort of them knowing that there are caring individuals ready to serve as they prepare for their future.
Earlier this month, we received the 2016-2017 Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR). The next section of my message contains highlights to be aware of and to celebrate as a community. The continuous improvement that we experience year-to-year is reflective of our teachers, staff, and administrators Commitment to Excellence. As a school district, we will refine the areas that need attention and continue to "know every student by name and need."
My September Moreno's Message indicated that during the past three years we increased our Average Daily Attendance (ADA) by 1%, increasing from 95.5 to 96.6%. Last year we dropped by the same equivalent of 1%. As we continue to increase in enrollment it is vital that our students attend school daily. Our goal this year will be to meet and exceed the 96.6% benchmark. As of today, our cumulative average is 96.8%. Let's keep up the momentum!
Your commitment to partner with LVISD will prepare our students for future opportunities. As always, thank you for your belief in La Vernia ISD. We are here to serve.

State of the District Highlights
Student enrollment continues to increase. In the past 5 years, from 2013 to 2017 the LVISD enrollment has increased from 3,056 to 3,372, which is a difference of 316 students. Enrollment is fluid, so we are continually reviewing our growth trends.
Student achievement continues to surpass region and state averages on State and College-Readiness accountability systems and receive Met Standard ratings according to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) requirements on STAAR/EOC. The 2016-2017 results indicate its highest ever Level III College-Ready performance with 82% of its 23 indicators meeting or exceeding prior year performance.
Under the University Interscholastic League (UIL), the District’s Debate program has received national recognition and continues to lead the way with over 25 competitions. Our athletic and fine arts programs have received several District and State recognitions. Last year, the District experienced its best year ever closing the University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup standing from 43rd to 13th place out of 200 schools in its division.
The Advanced Placement (AP) performance and participation continues to excel at an accelerated rate. Last year’s College Board results indicate that LVISD had a 31% increase in the number of AP student enrollment, a 75% increase in the total number of exams taken, a 66% increase in the total number of AP students scoring a 3 or higher, as well as 14 AP Scholars and 4 AP Scholars with Honors.
The District’s SAT and ACT results remain competitive and continue to surpass the region and state average. LVISD has added dual credit offerings and programs geared toward acquiring workforce certifications as well. This strategy has increased graduation rates to meet and exceed 98%!
