One School, One Book 2023
On Wednesday, February 1st, Lyncrest School launched an all school book club called One School, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book –Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, written by Roald Dahl, and is asked to read it at home during the month of February. The book has gone home with the youngest child in the family. We are personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special activity. Your family’s book has been numbered as we will be collecting the books at the end of the month. The books belong to the Lyncrest and Westmoreland PTO. Please take care of these books so that they may be used again in the future.
Your child is not expected to read this book independently, as it may not coincide with his/her reading level. Parents should read the chapters aloud to their child(ren). Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. It is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, and administrative staff – will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits.
With this letter and the book, you will find a tailored reading schedule to keep up at home. You will be asked to read 2-3 chapters each evening (Monday-Thursday) which is approximately 10-15 minutes per night.
Each day, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Throughout the month of February, everyone will be talking about Charlie, Willy Wonka, and the magnificent chocolate factory!
Lastly, I would like to personally thank the Lyncrest and Westmoreland PTO for sponsoring this program and allowing this wonderful reading journey to take place. This unique opportunity would not have been possible without you! As a culminating activity, the PTO will generously sponsor a special movie showing at Hawthorne Theater on March 5th.
We look forward to talking about this great story with both you and your child during the month. “When a whole school reads a book, there is a lot to talk about.” With your help, we are truly building a community of readers at Lyncrest School.
