Class is in Session!
September 10, 2015
The year is off to a great start! We are happy to be back in the swing of things and to have met our new students, staff, and faculty! The first week of school was fun and productive. Our own Red Scare marching band provided the soundtrack to our phenomenal opening day, playing for students as they came through the doors for the first time this school year (see pictures further down in this email).
A great big THANK YOU to all of our staff and faculty who helped get our school ready for 180+ days of learning!
So, what's new for this week? Read on to find out! If you missed the last email blast, you can access it here.

Changing Lives...One Smile at a Time
Members of the LHS Operation Smile Club had a very exciting summer! Seventeen students traveled to California from July 20-July 24 for the Operation Smile International Student Leadership Conference, where they met other students from 27 different countries. The theme of the conference was In:Vision 2020, which challenged students to think about who they will be in 2020, what type of change they will create, and why that change will be important to them. Students heard from incredible inspirational speakers including authors, record executives, CEOs, and TIME's 2014 Person of the Year, Katie Meyler! They also learned more about the organization, developed leadership skills, enjoyed dinners, an International Party, Team Games and Challenges, breakout sessions, shared fundraising ideas, purchased souvenirs, and made crowns to give to the children who have facial deformities.
*Olivia Waaben, President of the Lawrence High School Operation Smile club and Vice President of Public Relations for the Operation Smile New Jersey Regional Leadership Council, was the first ever recipient of the Operation Smile Memorial Award. This recognition awarded her a scholarship for Mission Training, an Operation Smile Mission, and the International Student Leadership Conference 2016, which is also in California. Congratulations to Olivia and to the rest of the LHS Operation Smile Club!*
Operation Smile is an international children's medical charity that provides free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries to those in developing or underdeveloped nations who suffer from facial deformities. Cleft lips and palates lead to difficulty breathing and speaking, malnutrition, and a lack of education because the community shuns them. However, one 45-minute surgery can literally change a child's life for just $240. All money raised from the club helps provide more surgeries for these children and breaks down their barriers to care (such as transportation, food, water, and shelter). If you would like to make a donation, please reach out to Mrs. Cheryl Eng or Olivia Waaben.
