GRE Family Gazette
April 22, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
I have exciting news to share-we have well over 300 signatures on the Race to the Finish Wall! Not only did we meet our school goal, we blew it out of the water. We don't stop when we meet a goal though, we push harder. Tomorrow I will be announcing another school goal and prize we can earn. Students and teachers alike are really enjoying our Race to the Finish festivities. Please help us keep our students focused on finishing the year strong!
Our first graders did an amazing job last week at our Informances. Thank you to Mrs. Wood, the first grade team and our custodians for supporting such amazing performances. It's clear that music is a very special time at GRE. Our third and fourth graders worked their tails off last week for the conclusion of the Ohio State Tests. Way to go!
We hope you'll join us this Thursday night for our annual Art Show & Food Truck Night! You can come anytime that works best for your family and enjoy the yummy food, art, and Scholastic Book Fair. See below for more details!
Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:
1. Just a reminder that if you are planning on going on one of the upcoming field trips as a chaperone- you must have your background check. You can visit the district website to learn more.
2. With the weather fluctuating so much be sure your students are dressed appropriately for the weather. This may include a light jacket or sweatshirt to start the day.
3. Are you looking for a way that you can make a positive impact in Big Walnut Schools? The district is in high need of substitute custodians and bus drivers. If interested, please visit the job postings at www.bwls.net/EmploymentOpportunities.aspx.
Training will be provided to all substitutes - potential drivers will receive all training necessary to meet licensing requirements for drivers. If you have any questions, please contact Ron McClure at 740-965-8967.
Specials Spotlight: Art with Mrs. Doran
It’s ART SHOW week! The students are so excited to showcase everything that they have been working on this school year. It’s a super fun night where you can drop in anytime you want between 6-7:30 for the Art Show and 5:30-7:30 for the Food Trucks! There will be a Fun with the Faculty Raffle to win “prizes” with teachers, a scavenger hunt to explore the art, make & take stations and even a BOGO Book Fair in the cafeteria! We hope to see you there!
Even though the art show is hung, students are still busy learning & creating in art…
KG- A big thank you to all the chaperones who came to the Art Museum with us! The students had a blast and we could not have done it without you! Students are now in a Fairy Tale unit and currently working on castle paintings! We observed parts of castles and then decided what shapes would be best to draw and paint their own!
1st- Students are learning about DaVinci and his inventions...He had over 13,000 pages of sketches of ideas! Students are coming up with their own inventions and creating the blueprint drawings of them. Ask your student what they invented, they have had some great ideas!
2nd- Students just finished learning about sculptures by creating their clay turtles! Make sure to peek in the display cases in the STEM hub during the art show to check them out! Students are anxiously waiting to take them home nest week!
3rd- Students have been reviewing 3D forms! First they learned how to draw transparent and solid forms, then we used different forms when making sculptures. Students created clay Gnome Homes that they will soon be glazing!
4th- Students learned about an anonymous street artist who goes by the name “Space Invader” based on the video game. He works in tiles to look like pixels and has installed his work all over the world….without anyone knowing who he is! Students use the website PixilArt to create their own pixel art picture and are now learning how to turn it into a GIF (a short animation that moves)!
